Cabinet Approves Four New Semiconductor Projects Worth ₹4,600 Crore Under ISM

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved four new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) from SiCSem, Continental Device India Ltd. (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies, with a total investment of ₹4,600 crore, generating employment for 2,034 skilled professionals.
  • With these approvals, the total ISM projects rise to 10, with cumulative investments of ₹1.60 lakh crore across six states, boosting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in sectors like telecom, automotive, datacentres, consumer electronics, and industrial electronics.
  • SiCSem and 3D Glass Solutions units will be set up in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha; CDIL will expand its facility in Mohali, Punjab; ASIP will set up a unit in Andhra Pradesh with South Korea’s APACT Co. Ltd.
  • Projects include India’s first commercial compound semiconductor fab (SiCSem), a cutting-edge glass substrate packaging unit (3D Glass Solutions), high-power discrete semiconductor devices (CDIL), and advanced system-in-package technology (ASIP).
  • These projects will enhance India’s semiconductor ecosystem, complement world-class chip design capabilities, and support government-backed initiatives benefiting 278 academic institutions, 72 start-ups, and over 60,000 students in talent development programmes.

Cabinet Approves ₹8,146 Crore Investment for 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved an investment of ₹8,146.21 crore for the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh, with an estimated completion period of 72 months and an annual energy generation of 2,738.06 MU.
  • The project will be implemented through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, with the Government of India providing ₹458.79 crore for enabling infrastructure (roads, bridges, transmission lines) and ₹436.13 crore as Central Financial Assistance towards the state’s equity share.
  • Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power from the project and an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF), along with significant infrastructure upgrades and socio-economic benefits for the region.

Lok Sabha Passes Indian Ports Bill, 2025 to Modernize Maritime Sector and Boost Coastal Development

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, aiming to consolidate port-related laws, promote integrated port development, facilitate ease of doing business, ensure optimal utilisation of India’s coastline, and comply with international maritime obligations, while also providing a framework for pollution control, disaster management, safety, and dispute resolution.
  • The Bill proposes to establish and empower State Maritime Boards for managing non-major ports and create a Maritime State Development Council to foster coordinated Centre–State efforts in port sector growth and strategic planning.
  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that in the last decade, port capacity has grown by 87%, cargo handling reached 855 million tonnes, and coastal shipping surged by 180%, making the Bill a strategic step to modernize the outdated Indian Ports Act, 1908.
  • MPs noted significant achievements such as reducing ship turnaround time in major ports from 93 hours to 48 hours, improving India’s international shipment ranking from 44 to 23 in 2023, and boosting cargo handling efficiency across the nation

MY Bharat Partners with SOUL Foundation to Develop Over One Lakh Youth Leaders Across India

  • MY Bharat, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has signed a three-year MoU with the School of Ultimate Leadership (SOUL) Foundation to collaborate on youth leadership development, capacity building, and knowledge sharing.
  • The partnership aims to develop over one lakh youth leaders aged 18–29 years across India through programs in governance, public policy, social entrepreneurship, digital literacy, financial literacy, and other domains.
  • Key activities under the MoU include youth leadership programs, conclaves, workshops, fellowships, training of institutions, policy research, exchange of expertise, online quizzes, and nationwide networking events, with an online leadership program expected to launch in September 2025.

India to Celebrate 79th Independence Day on 15 August 2025

  • The 79th Independence Day will be celebrated on 15th August 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the event from the iconic Red Fort in Delhi, unfurling the National Flag and addressing the nation.
  • The theme for this year is “Naya Bharat”, highlighting India’s vision of a prosperous, secure, and bold nation on the path to achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047, and commemorating the success of Operation Sindoor.
  • Around 5,000 special guests, including winners of international sports events, Special Olympics 2025 participants, and Khelo India Para Games gold medalists, will witness the celebrations, along with pan-India patriotic band performances by military and paramilitary forces at over 140 locations.

Gujarat to get new veterinary college

  • The Central Government has approved the establishment of Kamdhenu Veterinary College at Himatnagar under Kamdhenu University, offering 80 seats in B.VSc and Animal Husbandry programs.
  • Admissions for the 2025–26 academic year will begin next month and will be based on NEET scores.
  • This will be Gujarat’s fifth veterinary college, joining Anand, Navsari, Junagadh, and Dantiwada, after receiving approval from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) following a detailed inspection.

IIT Roorkee Develops Breakthrough Drug to Revive Antibiotic Power Against Deadly Superbug

  • IIT Roorkee researchers, led by Prof. Ranjana Pathania, have developed Compound 3b, a novel drug candidate that, when combined with the antibiotic Meropenem, restores its effectiveness against the deadly superbug Klebsiella pneumoniae, a WHO top-priority pathogen.
  • The compound works by neutralising bacterial enzymes that destroy antibiotics, showing high specificity, safety for human cells, and strong results in preclinical lung infection models.
  • This breakthrough offers new hope in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a global health crisis that threatens to make common infections lethal and complicates critical medical procedures like surgery and cancer treatment.

HDFC Bank SmartWealth goes multilingual in nine regional languages

  • HDFC Bank’s SmartWealth app now supports 9 regional languages (including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali) to make investing more inclusive, especially for Tier-II and Tier-III city investors.
  • The update introduces an industry-first capital gains & losses report feature, enabling users to track investment performance and tax implications across all mutual funds, even those outside SmartWealth.
  • SmartWealth offers a consolidated portfolio view of mutual funds, fixed deposits, and demat holdings, along with easy onboarding and personalised insights in users’ preferred languages

ICICI Bank lowers min balance requirement to ₹15,000 from ₹50,000

  • ICICI Bank has rolled back the minimum monthly average balance (MAB) for new savings accounts from ₹50,000 to ₹15,000, following valuable customer feedback.
  • For semi-urban accounts, the MAB has been revised to ₹7,500 (from ₹5,000 earlier), and for rural accounts to ₹2,500 (from ₹2,000 earlier), still marking a 50% hike.
  • Salary accounts, senior citizens, PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts, and accounts opened before July 31, 2025, are exempt; penalty for shortfall will be 6% of the gap or ₹500, whichever is lower.

What is MAB?

  • MAB is the minimum balance that a customer is required to maintain in a bank account. If the balance falls below the required amount, the bank levies a penalty. In case account holders fail to meet the MAB, customers will be liable to pay penal charges of 6% of the shortfall in required MAB, or ₹500, whichever is lower.

Namrata Batra Wins India’s First-Ever Wushu Medal at World Games 2025

  • Namrata Batra made history by winning India’s first-ever medal in Wushu at the World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China, securing silver in the women’s 52 kg category.
  • The 24-year-old, a four-time national champion and 2024 Asian Championships silver medalist, lost 2-0 in the final to China’s Mengyue Chen.
  • This was India’s second medal at the ongoing World Games, following Rishabh Yadav’s bronze in men’s compound archery, with Namrata defeating opponents from Lebanon and the Philippines en route to the final.

Jharkhand Women’s Hockey Team Wins 15th Junior National Championship for Second Consecutive Year

  • Jharkhand Women’s Hockey Team won the 15th Junior National Women’s Hockey Championship for the second consecutive year, defeating Hockey Haryana 2-1 in the final at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Sweety Dungdung emerged as the highest goal scorer of the tournament with a total of 5 goals, contributing significantly to Jharkhand’s victory.
  • Jharkhand has now won the Junior National Championship four times (2018, 2019, 2024, 2025) and in 2025, the state’s women’s hockey team claimed national titles across all three categories – Senior, Junior, and Sub-junior.

India Wins 27 Medals at Asian U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025

  • India concluded the Asian U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025 in Bangkok with a total of 27 medals, highlighted by Ritika’s gold in the women’s 80+ kg category.
  • The U19 team secured 14 medals (3 gold, 7 silver, 4 bronze), finishing second overall, while the U22 team earned 13 medals (1 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze), with Ritika as the sole gold medalist in this group.
  • Notable individual performances included Yatri Patel (women’s 57kg), Priya (60kg), Neeraj (men’s 75kg), and Ishan Kataria (90+kg), who all clinched silver medals in their respective categories.
  • India’s U19 team ranked just behind Uzbekistan in gold medals, the U22 team finished fourth, and earlier in 2025, the U15 & U17 teams combined won 43 medals, with the U15 squad earning 11 golds.

Rohith Krishna Becomes 89th Indian Grandmaster

  • Rohith Krishna, a 19-year-old and third-year student at SSN College of Engineering, became the 89th Indian Grandmaster after winning at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan.
  • He achieved the title on August 12, 2025, defeating IM Artur Davtyan of Romania in the final round, finishing with 6 points out of 9.
  • Despite his strong academic record, Rohith felt academics slowed his chess journey, but now he sees this victory as the start of a bigger journey.
