National News
BEL bags ₹695-crore order from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
- Navratna PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has received an order of ₹695 crore from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd for the supply of spares related to missile systems.
- The PSU has also received additional orders worth ₹339.31 crore since the last disclosure on December 2023, and these orders pertain to the Combat Management System, Composite Communication System, Transmit and Receive Modules, Mobile Autonomous Stabilization System, and other spares and services.
- With the latest order, BEL has received cumulative orders of ₹27,647.31 crore in the current financial year.
Parshotham Rupala Launches Project for Artificial Reefs in Vizhinjam
- Union Minister of Fisheries, Parshotham Rupala has launched the project of depositing artificial reefs in the seabed in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram.
- The project, a joint initiative of the Central and State governments, is aimed at increasing the income of fishermen by enhancing the fish population in the region.
- The project is being implemented under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana with a total outlay of 13.02 crore. Out of this, 7.812 crore is being provided by the Central Government and 5.208 crore is the State government’s share.
- Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation implements the project with technical assistance from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
- In the first phase, 6,300 artificial reefs will be laid in 42 fishing villages from Pozhiyur to Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district.
Amit Shah Inaugurates New Cooperative Office for Strengthening Societies and Rural Economy
- Home and Cooperation Minister, Amit Shah has inaugurated the new building of the office of Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies office at the World Trade Centre, Naroji Nagar in New Delhi.
- The cooperative sector makes a big contribution to India’s five trillion dollars economy goal.
- Amit said that, after the establishment of the Cooperation Ministry, Cooperative Societies are being strengthened and Rural Economy is getting connected with Modern Technologies.
- Before the formation of the Ministry of Cooperation, the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies did not have enough staff and there was no computerization.

Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurates 12th General Assembly of the Asian Buddhist Conference for Peace
- Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has inaugurated the 12th General Assembly of the Asian Buddhist Conference for Peace in New Delhi.
- Vice President said that the world today faces challenges like climate change, conflict, terrorism, and poverty which are universal and can be addressed by common resolve and collaborative and collective approach.
- He said, when we talk of Buddhism in Asia, it is a large part of area and population which is multicultural encompassing diverse customs and traditions, art, architecture, music, literature, lifestyle, philosophy, food, politics, and religion.
MeitY Secretary launches “Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Internet of Things Sensors” in Kerala
- Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), S Krishnan has launched two flagship programs – “Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) Sensors” and India’s first Graphene Centre “India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG)” at Maker Village, Kochi, Kerala.
- The CoE in IIoT Sensors is a unique facility established at Makers Village Kochi by MeitY, the Government of India, and the government of Kerala to catalyze the development of sensors within the realm of Intelligent IoT systems covering a broad spectrum of applications of intelligent sensors in networks, devices, and sensor systems.
- Digital University Kerala (DUK) (formerly IIITMK) and Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET)-Thrissur are the technical partner for setting up these centers at Makers Village Kochi.
- The complete full-fledged facility for R&D, incubation, innovation, skilling, capacity building, testing & certification shall be established at these centers by the experts of these agencies.
Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates Asia’s Largest Aviation Expo Wings India 2024
- Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M Scindia has inaugurated Wings India 2024, Asia’s largest aviation expo, at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad.
- This event marks a significant milestone in the Indian aviation sector, highlighting its growth and future potential.
- The four-day event is being organized by the Airports Authority of India in collaboration with the Ministry and FICCI.
- The Wings India, supposed to be the biggest civil aviation show in Asia, will be showcasing an array of new-generation aircraft displays, allied aviation services, auxiliary unit industries, and advancements in the tourism sector.
- The biennial event is being held with the main theme ‘Connecting India with the World in Amritkal’ and witness deliberations over the strategies and strategic framework for the future Aviation Sector of the country.
- About 1500 delegates from over 100 countries, about five thousand business representatives and over one lakh visitors are expected to take part in the event. About 500 Business to Business meetings are also scheduled to be held during the event.
- Meanwhile, the latest widebody Boeing aircraft, 777-9, and the new engineering marvel, Airbus A350 will be displayed for the first time at the Wings India air show in Hyderabad.
Adani Group plans to invest Rs12,400 crore in Telangana

- The Adani Group headed by its chairman Gautam Adani has announced investments to the tune of Rs 12,400 crore in Telangana in the next few years.
- Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) will invest over Rs 5,000 crore in a 100-MW data centre to be powered by renewable energy, over the coming 5-7 years.
- AEL will work closely with local micro, small and medium enterprises and start-ups to develop a globally competent supplier base for the project. It would provide direct and indirect jobs to 600 people.
- Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) will invest over Rs 5,000 crore to set up two pump storage projects (PSPs) – 850 MW at Koyabestagudem and 500 MW at Nacharam in the State.
- Ambuja Cements, which was acquired by the Ahmedabad-based group, will invest Rs 1,400 crore to set up a 6 MTPA cement plant in the next five years. The unit would be set up across 70 acres and would significantly enhance Ambuja’s capability. It will provide employment to over 4,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
- Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Ltd will invest over Rs 1,000 crore in 10 years to set up a comprehensive ecosystem for the research, development, design, manufacturing and integration of counter drone and missile systems at the Adani Aerospace Park.

UAE unveils groundbreaking ‘EcoMark’ green accreditation framework
- UAE has introduced the world’s first sustainability accreditation framework for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
- ‘EcoMark’ Global Accreditation, based on ISO standards, aims to enhance MSMEs’ global competitiveness in the green economy.
- Digitally enabled certification includes resources for document requirements, sustainability roadmap, and standardized application process.

Farsi as India’s New Classical Language
- In a significant move to deepen cultural ties, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that the Government of India has decided to include Farsi (Persian) as one of the nine classical languages in India under the New Education Policy.
- Jaishankar also highlights the cultural, literary, and linguistic connections between Iran and India.
- This recognition reflects a commitment to fostering greater understanding and appreciation of Farsi’s rich heritage within the Indian educational framework.
- Tamil was the first language in India to be accorded classical language status in 2004.
- Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia are the other languages that have been declared classical languages in India by the central government.
- In addition to these classical languages Pali, Persian, and Prakrit; and their works of literature too must be preserved for their richness and for the pleasure and enrichment of posterity,” according to India’s National Education Policy-2020.
- The criteria for declaring a language as ‘Classical’ include a recorded history of 1500-2000 years, a valuable heritage of ancient literature, an original literary tradition, and distinctness from modern forms or offshoots.
8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution
- The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution lists the official languages of the Republic of India, including 22 languages. This schedule is pivotal for representation on the Official Languages Commission and enriches Hindi and English, the official languages of the Union.
- The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, governed by Articles 344(1) and 351, lists the official languages of India, currently numbering 22. This schedule initially included 14 languages in 1950, with gradual additions over the years, reflecting India’s linguistic diversity and cultural richness.

TCS ranked second most valuable IT brand in global list

- Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been rated as the second most valuable IT services brand in the world in the 2024 Global 500 IT Services Ranking by Brand Finance.
- TCS’ brand value has surged to $19.2 billion from $17.2 billion in 2023, showing a strong growth of 11.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y).
- The incremental $2-billion growth is the highest absolute growth posted among the top 25 leading IT firms in the world.
- Besides TCS, Accenture and Infosys boosted their brand value as well. The three firms topped the list of IT firms in terms of brand value.
- Accenture maintained its position as the world’s most valuable IT services brand, with a brand value of $40.5 billion, up 1.6 per cent from last year.
- The brand finance report suggests that adoption of technologies like generative AI has played a major role in boosting brand value of IT firms especially Accenture.
- Meanwhile, Azim-Premji-backed Wipro was the only IT services major to have witnessed an erosion in brand value by 7.6 per cent on a y-o-y basis to $6.2 billion.

- Rear Admiral Shantanu Jha took charge as Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at the Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command.
- Rear Admiral holds the key appointment of the Commodore in (Strategy, Concepts & Transformation) at Naval Headquarters before he took charge as Chief Staff Officer.
- The Rear Admiral is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and Navigation and Direction specialist. The admiral has a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from Madras University and International Security & Strategy from Kings College, London.
- His diverse experience in International Cooperation has also included his role as Naval Attaché at Tehran.

- Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has released the book ‘Fertilising the Future: Bharat’s March Towards Fertilizer Self-Sufficiency’.
- It is written by Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
- The Hindi version of the book is titled ‘Urvarak-Atmanirbharta ki Raah.’
- The book delineated the journey of making India self-reliant in the fertilizer sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the revolutionary changes that have taken place till date.

Praggnanandhaa Surpasses Viswanathan Anand to Become India’s No.1 Chess Player

- Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, an 18-year-old chess prodigy from Chennai, achieved a historic milestone in his career by defeating World Champion Ding Liren from China.
- This significant victory occurred during the fourth round of the 2024 Tata Steel Chess Tournament held in Wijk aan Zee.
- Praggnanandhaa also leapfrogged over five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand as the country’s top-ranked chess player in the FIDE’s live ratings with a rating of 2748.3, while Anand is at 2748. (FIDE discloses the published ratings at the start of each month).
- Pragg became the second Indian after Anand to defeat a reigning world champion in classical chess.
- At Wijk aan Zee, Ding is playing in a rare tournament after taking the world championship crown last year by defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi.
- Meanwhile, Gukesh, who last year had become the first Indian to overhaul Anand as India No 1 in 36 years in the FIDE published ratings, lost his encounter with Anish Giri.
Rohit Sharma becomes the most prolific T20I centurion
- Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has created history by becoming the first batsman to score five centuries in T20 Internationals (T20Is).
- This milestone was achieved during the third T20I match against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.
- The match between India and Afghanistan became the first in international cricket to feature two Super Overs. It is only the second T20 match to have two super overs – Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab in the IPL in 2020 was the first teams scoring 214.
- 5 Hundreds for Rohit Sharma in T20I cricket are the most for any batter in the format, going one ahead of Glenn Maxwell and Suryakumar Yadav.
- Rohit had set the record for most T20I hundreds in November 2018, with his fourth century to surpass Colin Munro (3). That record was equalled recently by Maxwell (in November 2023) and Suryakumar (in Dec 2023) before Rohit claimed it back.
