National News
Government sets up high power committee to review DRDO
- The Centre has formed a nine-member committee to review the functioning of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
- The committee headed by Prof K Vijay Raghavan to review and redefine the role of the department and submit a report within three months.
- Prof Vijay Raghavan is a former Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and one of the key architects of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
- The members also include a retired diplomat, an ISRO scientist and a serving officer.
- The committee would suggest measures to revamp DRDO to make it more result-oriented.

IWAI signs MoU with NRL for export of Petroleum Cargo via NW 2 & IBPR
- The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a MoU with the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) to use National Waterways-2 (Brahmaputra) and Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) for export of petroleum products to Bangladesh and other southeast Asian countries.
- The MoU is aimed at powering PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to boost India’s Act East Policy.
- The Numaligarh Refinery will export around 10,000 million tonnes (MT) of petroleum and petrochemical products per month from IWAI Jogighopa Multi-Modal terminal. The Numaligarh Refinery will set up POL Oil Terminal at Jogighopa Logistics Park with rail connectivity.
- The Numaligarh Refinery will also provide 40 acres of land with a provision of getting connected to nearest Railway station at Jogighopa; and erect the loading and unloading facility; apart from transportation of petroleum.
- NRL is also in the process of executing the Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP), a refinery expansion cum modernization project with a capex of Rs 28,026 crore.
IIT Bombay receives donation of 18.6 million for Green Energy Hub
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has received a $18.6 million donation from an alumnus for setting up a green energy and sustainability research hub.
- This landmark contribution will redefine the Institute’s role in addressing the global climate crisis.
- The state-of-the-art academic building will be located on the IIT Bombay campus. The focus areas of this hub will include evaluation of climate risks and development of effective mitigation strategies, climate change adaptation, and comprehensive environmental monitoring.
- The hub will facilitate research in several critical areas, including battery technologies, solar photovoltaics, biofuels, clean-air science, flood forecasting, etc.
Punjab emerged as the top state in Nutrition Awareness Index 2023
- The ‘Right To Protein’ campaign released the ‘Nutrition Awareness Index 2023’, a state-wise index assessing awareness, affordability, and accessibility of nutrition in India as perceived by end-consumers (citizens).
- The Nutrition Awareness Index aims to serve as an important tool to advance the vision of nutrition security in India – with regards to commitments, practices, and management.
- Punjab emerged as the top state, scoring 11% above the national average, while Bihar ranked at the bottom, scoring 10% below the national average.
- Based on the total scores, the other top-ranked states are, Karnataka (9% higher than the national average), Delhi (7% higher), Uttarakhand (6% higher) and Assam (5% higher).
- While the bottom-ranked ones are Andhra Pradesh (10% lower than the national average), Rajasthan (8% lower), Tamil Nadu (6% lower) and Gujarat (6% lower).
- The Index also found that majority Indians are unaware of vegetarian protein sources. Over 53% of young Indians (aged 18-35) find nutrition access challenging and while over 50% of them feel they eat balanced but failed to identify nutritional food sources correctly.

Assam Govt issues notification banning plastic water bottles
- The Assam Environment and Forest Department has issued a notification banning the use and production of plastic water bottles below 1000 ml capacity in the state from October 2 this year.
- The Assam Environment and Forest Department has issued a notification, prohibiting the use or manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, or sale of plastic water bottles below 1000 ml capacity in the state from October 2 this year.
- It is observed that the use of packaged drinking water bottles up to 1000 ml volume and their pollution potential is higher than packaged drinking water bottles of larger volume.
- The implementation of the prohibition of the notification shall vest in Urban and Rural local bodies, District Administration and Police department and the Pollution Control Board of Assam.

Jharkhand govt inks pact with TGESPL
- The Jharkhand government has signed an MoU with TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Ltd. (TGESPL) to set up the country’s “first” hydrogen fuel project in Jamshedpur at an estimated cost of over Rs 350 crore.
- The capacity of the proposed unit will be over 4,000 hydrogen IC engine/fuel agnostic engine and more than 10,000 battery system.
- The facility is expected to start commercial production in March 2024, and likely provide employment to about 1,000 people directly or indirectly.

Infosys welcomes Iga Swiatek as Global Brand Ambassador
- IT giant Infosys has announced a multi-year partnership with women’s tennis world number 1 Iga Swiatek, appointing her as the ambassador for the brand.
- Swiatek is a four-time Grand Slam Champion and has been ranked World No. 1 since April 22 for a record 70 consecutive weeks.
- It will now work closely with Swiatek’s team to build an advanced data analytics and video dashboard by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to amplify her training and evolve her strengths and match strategy.
- Infosys and Swiatek will also conceptualize and promote programs to help women from underserved communities build careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
- On August 24, the IT company announced a three-year partnership with global tennis legend Rafael Nadal, appointing him as the ambassador for the brand and Infosys’ Digital Innovation.
- This marks Nadal’s first-ever collaboration with a digital services company.

PM Modi conferred with award by Greece President
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with ‘The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour’ award by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
- This is the second-highest civilian honour in Greece.
- The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour is conferred to “eminent personalities who by reason of their distinguished position, have contributed to enhancing the stature of Greece”.
- This day-long trip is the first visit to Greece by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years.
- The Order of Honour was established in 1975.

India won 50m pistol women’s team gold medal
- The Indian 50m pistol women’s team containing Tiyana, Sakshi Suryavanshi, and Kirandeep Kaur bagged the gold medal at the ISSF World Championships 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
- The Indian trio shot a composite score of 1573-6x to finish on the top of the podium.
- China finished second with a score of 1567-9x while Mongolia bagged the bronze with a combined score of 1566-3x.
- With a total score of 1646-28x in the men’s 50m pistol team competition, the Indian team of Vikram Jagannath Shinde, Kamaljeet, and Ravinder Singh won the bronze medal.
- The gold medal went to China (1655-32x points), and the silver to the Republic of Korea (1654-30x).
- Tiyana and Ravinder Singh of India won bronze medals in the men’s and women’s individual events, respectively.
- Tiyana placed third out of 14 shooters in the women’s solo 50m pistol final with a score of 533. Gold and silver medals were won by Austrian shooter Sylvia Steiner (540 points) and Mongolian shooter Bayartsetseg Tumurchudur (534) respectively.

- Women’s Equality Day is celebrated every year on August 26 to highlight the achievements made by women in various fields.
- The day also aims to bring to the fore the struggles women have faced to win equal rights.
- Women’s Equality Day is marked primarily in the US on August 26 annually. It was on this day in 1920 when women in the US were granted the right to vote after decades of hardships and advocacy.
- Women’s Equality Day was first celebrated on August 26, 1971. Since then, it has been proclaimed each year by the president of the US.
- The idea to mark the day stems from the years of protests and demonstrations by women to achieve equal rights in terms of social status and opportunities.
- The first such protest by women for equal rights was held at the world’s first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 in New York State.
- In 1971, a bill was introduced by women’s rights activist and United States Congress Representative Bella Abzug to declare August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. This had come after the ‘strike for equality’ protest by women to mark the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
- In 1973, the 37th President of the United States Richard Nixon formally recognised August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

Eminent Statistician CR Rao Passed Away
- Renowned mathematician and statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, widely known as C R Rao, passed away at the age of 102.
- He had recently received the prestigious “International Prize in Statistics-2023”, often referred to as the “statistics’ equivalent of the Nobel Prize”.
- He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan award in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan award in 2001.
Former WWE Champion Windham Rotunda aka Bray Wyatt passes away
- Windham Rotunda, who was known as Bray Wyatt passed away at the age of just 36.
- Rotunda was an American professional wrestler. He was best known for his tenure in WWE, where he performed under the ring name Bray Wyatt.
- Wyatt gained recognition among the fans the moment he made his debut with his ‘Wyatt Family.”
