MP CM unveils 108-ft statue of Adi Shankaracharya in Omkareshwar

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has unveiled the 108-foot-tall ‘Statue of Oneness’ of Adi Shankaracharya at Omkareshwar in the poll-bound.
  • The statue depicts Shankaracharya as a 12-year-old child when he is said to have visited Omkareshwar.
  • The government has invested Rs 2,200 crore to develop the temple town located on the Mandhata island of Khandwa district, which will form an important tourism circuit, along with Ujjain, Maheshwar and Mandu religious towns.

Who was Adi Shankaracharya?

  • Adi Shankara, who is believed to have lived between 788 and 820 AD, was born in Kerela’s Kaladi, situated on the bank of the Periyar River.
  • He became a sanyasin at an early age and left his Brahmin household, where he is said to have made his way to Omkareshwar.
  • Here, he studied under his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada and soon became a proponent of Advaita Vedanta, challenging prevailing philosophical traditions – including Buddhism and Jainism.

Northeast’s Mithun gets ‘food animal’ tag and its meat a leg-up

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recognized Mithun, a semi-domesticated bovine animal as a food animal.
  • The recognition of Mithun as a ‘food animal’ and the efforts to promote its meat as a commercial product can indeed have significant economic and cultural implications for the region.
  • Found in altitudes ranging between 300 to 3,000 meters, Mithuns have traditionally been part of the culture of various tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.

75 percent Indian villages declared ODF Plus

  • According to the Union Government, 75 percent of villages across the country have achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) plus status under the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase-2.
  • An ODF plus is one that has sustained its Open Defecation Free status along with the implementation of Solid and Liquid waste management systems.
  • Over four lakh 43 thousand villages have declared themselves ODF plus so far. 14 States and Union Territories had achieved hundred percent villages under the ODF plus.  This includes Goa, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The government had set a target to achieve cent percent cleanliness in villages by 2024-25 under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase-2.
  • Over five crore people have participated in Swachhata Hi Seva activities, which were initiated on the 15th of this month. More than two crore people have participated in various Shramdaan activities so far.

Hardeep Puri launched India’s first green hydrogen fuel cell bus in Delhi

  • Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri has flagged off India’s first Green Hydrogen fuel cell bus in Delhi.
  • The government is planning to roll 15 additional buses soon in the National Capital Region (NCR).
  • Green Hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, holds the potential to play a pivotal role in low-carbon and self-reliant economic pathways.
  • These buses are a positive step towards India’s aim to reach net zero carbon emission by 2070.

UPNEDA and SIDBI join hands to promote green projects

  • Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) has signed an MoU with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for the solarization of residential units at Ayodhya and for bio-energy and renewable project financing.
  • The MoU between UPNEDA and SIDBI is expected to help in promoting solar energy. This initiative will encourage innovations for environment-friendly projects.
  • The members of both organizations threw light on the initiatives taken by SIDBI to support the Government of India’s project for installing solar rooftop panels in 2500 MSMEs to take care of their captive consumption.
  • The bank has been working to support the electric vehicles sector with the objective of achieving the Government of India’s vision for 30% electrification of vehicles by the year 2030, under the EV30@30 mission.
  • Other programmes in which SIDBI is involved include projects for mobilizing energy efficiency investments in the MSME sector. These projects are leading to reduction in greenhouse emissions.
  • SIDBI is also supporting technology interventions for transforming waste to wealth and for promoting innovative technologies.

World’s largest Hindu temple outside India to be inaugurated on 8 Oct

  • The world’s largest Hindu temple constructed outside India in the modern era will be inaugurated in New Jersey on October 8.
  • The temple was built by an army of over 12500 volunteers from across the US over a period of 12 years from 2011 to 2023.
  • The temple includes 10000 statues and carvings of Indian musical instruments and dance forms.
  • The temple houses the largest elliptical dome of traditional stone architecture ever constructed.
  • The temple popular as Akshardham measures 255 ft x 345 ft x 191 ft and spans over 183 acres.
  • The temple is possibly the second largest after Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
  • The 12th-century Angkor Wat Temple Complex, the largest Hindu temple in the World, is spread over 500 acres and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Akshardham temple in New Delhi which was opened for the public in November 2005 is spread over 100 acres.
  • The unique Hindu temple design includes one main shrine, 12 sub-shrines, nine shikhars (spire-like structures), and nine pyramidal shikhars. Akshardham houses the largest elliptical dome of traditional stone architecture ever constructed. It is designed to last a thousand years.

JP Morgan to add India G-Secs to its emerging market bond index

  • JP Morgan Chase & Company will include Indian government bonds to its emerging markets bond index from June 2024.
  • The move can potentially attract about $25 billion into the country, as per analyst estimates.
  • India, which will be included in the GBI-EM Global Index suite starting June 28, 2024, is expected to reach the maximum weight of 10 percent in the GBI-EM Global Diversified Index (GBI-EM GD).
  • Currently, 23 Indian government bonds with a combined notional value of $330 billion are index-eligible. Inclusion of the bonds will be staggered over 10 months through March 31, 2025 (i.e., inclusion of 1 percent weight per month).

SIDBI signs with DLAI to boost fintech sector

  • The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has signed an agreement with the Digital Lenders Association of India (DLAI) to boost the country’s fintech sector.
  • The MoU aims for collaborations with SIDBI to develop standard protocols to expedite the adoption of digital lending partnerships including alliances between banks and Lending Service Providers (LSPs).
  • SIDBI will also provide resource support to eligible DLAI member NBFCs and also explore Assignment and Securitization transactions.
  • Under the agreement, SIDBI and DLAI will explore partnerships for its “Prayaas” Scheme for informal enterprises, co-lending, GST Sahay, Express loan, green financing, and other direct credit schemes.
  • Both organizations are committed to leveraging our combined expertise and resources to put the sector on a high growth trajectory with responsible lending with innovation embedded therein.

  • It is an innovative service, set to revolutionize cash withdrawal experiences.
  • It is dedicated to offering process-centric, technology-driven, and customer-oriented services that lead to a reliable, scalable, and sustainable institution, driving socio-economic change.
  • The Bank is pleased to announce the launch of the Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal (ICCW) service, which utilizes UPI (Unified Payments Interface) on its ATM networks.
  • This is In line with the Reserve Bank of India’s directive in May 2022, urging all banks to provide Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal (ICCW) options at their ATMs, and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank has taken the lead in fulfilling this mandate.
  • The ICCW service empowers bank customers who are active on UPI to conveniently withdraw cash from Utkarsh Small Finance Bank ATMs designated for UPI-ATM – ICCW transactions, all without the need for a physical debit card.

ICICI Lombard appoints Sanjeev Mantri as MD and CEO

  • Sanjeev Mantri has been appointed the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICICI Lombard.
  • Mantri, who is currently an Executive Director at ICICI Lombard General Insurance, will take over his new role from December 1, 2023, or the date of IRDAI approval, whichever is later, for a period of five consecutive years.
  • Sanjeev Mantri has been with the ICICI Group for over 20 years, beginning his career with ICICI Bank in 2003.
  • The general insurer’s latest move to appoint Mantri as the MD & CEO of the company follows the recent resignation of Bhargav Dasgupta as MD & CEO of the company.
  • Dasgupta, who held the post of MD & CEO of ICICI Lombard for 14 years, had resigned few days back to pursue a career outside India. Over the 14 years when Bhargav was at the helm, the company’s revenues grew six times and net profits 78 times.
  • Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Bhargav Dasgupta as Vice-President of market solutions for 3 years.

India women’s cricket team wins Gold after beating Sri Lanka

  • India women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final to win a gold medal in the ongoing Asian Games 2023.
  • This was India’s second gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss for India and opted to bat first in the final.
  • After winning the toss, they chose to bat first and managed to reach a total of 116-7 in their allotted 20 overs. The key partnership of Smriti Mandhana, who contributed with 46 runs, and Jemimah Rodrigues, who added 42, played a pivotal role in setting up a competitive target for Sri Lanka.
  • In the bronze medal match, Bangladesh emerged victorious by restricting Pakistan to a meager total of 64-9. They then successfully chased down their target of 65 runs in 18.2 overs, securing the bronze medal.
  • Pakistan, who had previously won gold in the Asian Games cricket competition, returned home empty-handed, pointing to their inability to set challenging scores as a significant contributor to their disappointing showing.

India bags gold medal in Men’s 10-meter air rifle event at Asian Game 2023

  • India’s Men’s 10m Air Rifle Team has broken the World Record to win the first gold medal for the nation in the ongoing Asian Games 2023.
  • The team, consisting of Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil, Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, not only clinched India’s first gold medal of the games but also shattered the world record in the process.
  • The trio shot a total of 1893.7 points in the individual qualification round, surpassing the previous world record set by China at the Baku World Championship.
  • South Korea finished in second place with 1890.1 points, while China came in third with a total score of 1888.2.
  • Rudrankksh, who finished third in qualification, scored 631.6 points for the team. Aishwary registered 631.6 points while Divyansh scored 629.6 points for India.
  • The women’s 10m air rifle team, featuring Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ramita Jindal, also made their mark by securing India’s first medal at Hangzhou 2023, a silver in shooting.

Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi wins MotoGP Bharat 2023

  • Marco Bezzecchi won the maiden Indian GP at the Buddh International Circuit in
  • While, Spain’s Jorge Martin and France’s Fabio Quartararo finished second and third, respectively.
  • Pole-sitter Bezzecchi lost out on a sprint podium after a collision with teammate Luca Marini, eventually finishing fifth.
  • Bezzecchi, riding for Mooney VR46 Racing Team, had to overcome tight competition from Jorge Martin and the championship leader, Francesco Bagnaia, before taking the victory at the Buddh International Circuit.
  • The race was held at a reduced distance of 21 laps to ease the stress on the riders.
  • The total number of teams in each of the MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 races were 11, 16, and 14, respectively.

India becomes first team in ODI Cricket history to hit 3000 sixes

  • Indian cricketers created history and became the first team to hit the 3000 sixes mark (3007) in ODI cricket. No team has hit 3,000 sixes in ODIs so far.
  • West Indies (2953) is the team with most number of sixes in ODIs after India.
  • Pakistan (2566), Australia (2476), New Zealand (2387), England (2032), South Africa (1947), Sri Lanka (1779), Zimbabwe (1303) and Bangladesh (959) are in this list.

25 September – Antyodaya Diwas

  • Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated annually in India to mark the birth anniversary of Indian leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
  • It is a day of remembrance and celebration of his life and legacy and he was one of the most prominent figures in India’s political history.
  • He was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and a thinker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
  • Upadhyaya is also known for his efforts to uplift the poor and less fortunate, and so his birth anniversary is celebrated on Antyodaya, which means ‘rising of the last’.
  • Tragically, he passed away in 1968 near the Mughalsarai Junction railway station. In recognition of his contributions, the Uttar Pradesh government renamed the station as ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction’ in 2018.
  • Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s legacy also extends to the realm of rural development, as in 2014, on this day, the Ministry of Rural Development reintroduced “Aajeevika Skills,” a skill development program under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), later renamed Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-NRLM in November 2015.

  • Objective – To create awareness about the impact of environmental health on our overall health and well-being.
  • Theme 2023 – Global Environmental Public Health: Standing up to protect everyone’s Health each and every day
  • Environmental health is a branch of public health and the main aim of both is to foster healthy and hygienic communities, which will, in turn, help the environment to thrive.
  • The history of World Environmental Health Day dates back to 2011 when the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) declared 26 September as the World Environmental Health Day.
  • IFEH has been working since a long time to address the challenges and barriers towards maintaining good environmental health. The primary reason behind celebrating the World Environmental Health Day annually is to create awareness and promote a healthy environment for living beings.
