Bhubaneswar wins the ‘City with the Best Public Transport System’ at 17th Urban Mobility India Conference & Exhibition

• Bhubaneswar won the ‘City with the Best Public Transport System’ at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2024.
• Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal addressed the valedictory session of the three-day 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2024 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
• This year, the Conference was focussed on the theme “Standardisation and Optimisation of Urban Transport Solutions”.
• The UMI has different categories of awards in the field of Transport Sector, especially in Urban Transport. The awards are given to the state/city authorities for “Excellence/ best practice projects in Urban Transport”.
• On this occasion, Shri Manohar Lal, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Power, Government of India also announced Gurugram, Haryana as the venue of 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2025.
• 17th UMI Conference & Exhibition 2024 has been organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Institute of Urban Transport (India) and, with the support of Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.
• The exhibition comprising display of best practices in urban transport in India and aboard, latest urban transport technologies, attracted more than 2200 delegates including more than 50 participants from abroad. The exhibition is an important part of the UMI Conference organized every year.

PM Modi & Spanish PM Pedro inaugurate Tata’s C-295 aircraft factory

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the visiting Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, jointly inaugurated the Tata Advanced Systems Ltd’s (TASL) Tata Aircraft Complex at Vadodara, Gujarat.
• The complex is the final assembly line plant of the C-295 military transport aircraft that India bought from Airbus.
• This is Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s first visit to India, and after 18 years, a Spanish Prime Minister has been visiting India.
• The plant has been set up by Tata Advanced Systems in collaboration with Airbus Spain. The facility is built at the TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) campus.
• A total of 56 aircraft are there under the C-295 programme, of which 16 are being delivered directly by Airbus from Spain and the remaining 40 are to be made in India.
• Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. is responsible for making these 40 aircraft in India. This facility will be the first private sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft in India.

India Ranks 79 out of 142 in the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index

• India ranked 79 out of 142 countries in the Rule of Law Index 2024, released by the World Justice Project (WJP), a Washington D.C.-based think tank.
• Globally, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Germany stood in the top five places.
• The Rule of Law Index ranks the countries on eight indicators: constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil Justice and criminal justice.
• India performed tolerably on governance indicators i.e. constraints on government powers (60/142) and open government (44/142). The governance ranks showed India’s push for better governance frameworks and also the myriad lapses, lack of coordination and intentionality in the efforts.
• It has put up a poor show in the protection of fundamental rights (102/142), the order and security of the people (98/142) and the efficiency of criminal justice (82/142). The sub-par policing systems, the lack of governments’ will to respect and protect the commoners’ rights and the ever-delayed criminal justice system got the country a poor score.
• Within South Asia, India ranked third after Nepal (69) and Sri Lanka (75), followed by Bangladesh (127) Pakistan (129) and Afghanistan (140).
• Among the G7 countries, Germany topped fifth, followed by Canada (12), Japan (14), UK (15), France (22), the USA (27) and Italy (32). Venezuela got the lowest rank and placed at 142.

• State Bank of India (SBI) was recognised as the Best Bank in India for 2024 by Global Finance Magazine of the US at its 31st Annual Best Bank Awards event held during the sidelines of Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington.
• SBI Chairman CS Setty received the award in recognition of the bank’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional services and promoting financial inclusion nationwide by winning the trust of its customers.
• Global Finance’s Best Bank Awards, esteemed for their credibility and integrity, spotlight top banks worldwide and hold significant value in the corporate finance sector. The award recognized the bank’s outstanding customer service and dedication to advancing financial inclusion across India.
• SBI, which boasts an extensive network of over 22,500 branches and 62,000 ATMs, has been strengthening its growth in the Indian banking sector through its YONO digital platform.
• 63% of new savings accounts opened digitally in Q1 FY25 and pre-approved personal loan disbursements totaling Rs 1,399 crore were made through YONO.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das ranks top central banker by US magazine

• Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been ranked the top central banker by the US-based Global Finance magazine.
• This is the second consecutive year that he has been ranked as the top central banker globally.
• Governor Shaktikanta received the award for A+ grade in Central Bank Report Cards 2024, for the second consecutive year. Das has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors, who have been rated A+.
• Grades are based on a scale from A to F for success in inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management, according to a statement by Global Finance magazine.
• An ‘A’ represents excellent performance, while an ‘F’ for outright failure.
• Denmark’s Christian Kettel Thomsen, and Switzerland’s Thomas Jordan have also been ranked under the ‘A+’ category of central bankers.

Appointment

Deepak Agarwal Appointed as Regular MD of NAFED

• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Deepak Agarwal as the new Managing Director (MD) of the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) for a five-year term.
• Agarwal is a 2000-batch IAS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
• Earlier, on September 30, the ACC had appointed Pankaj Kumar Bansal, the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation, to hold the post of MD, NAFED temporarily. This provisional assignment was set for either a period of three months or until a regular MD appointment could be made.

• NAFED, established in 1958, is a crucial player in India’s agricultural sector, functioning as a cooperative marketing organization.
• It aims to promote the welfare of Indian farmers by ensuring fair prices for their produce and providing market linkage.
• The organization operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and has a mandate to support price stabilization, especially for key agricultural commodities.

Conservation scientist Bibhab Talukdar conferred with IUCN award

• A passionate conservation scientist of global repute from Assam Bibhab Kumar Talukdar has been conferred ‘The Harry Messel Award’ for Conservation Leadership by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
• The award was presented to him at the 5th IUCN SSC Leaders’ Meeting that is underway in Abu Dhabi.
• The award has been presented for Talukdar’s contribution to species Conservation on the ground and through leadership, as part of the work of the Species Survival Commission.
• He has been associated with IUCN SSC since 1991 and became the Chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group in 2008.
• About 300 conservation experts have come together in the IUCN SSC meeting to tackle the intertwined crises of biodiversity and climate change.

• Kochi City of Kerala has won the City with the Most Sustainable Transport System award at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2024.
• The award winners in the various categories were felicitated at the 17th Urban Mobility Conference and Exhibition held at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
• The 17th Urban Mobility India Conference & Exhibition 2024 theme was “Standardisation and Optimisation of Urban Transport Solutions”.
• The valedictory session of the 17th Urban Mobility India Conference & Exhibition 2024 was addressed by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar.

India finishes U23 World Wrestling Championships 2024 with 9 Medals

• The Indian wrestling contingent finished its U23 World Wrestling Championships 2024 campaign with nine medals—1 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze.
• Last year also, the Indian contingent had won 9 medals -1 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals at the U23 World Wrestling Championships 2023 held in Tirana.
• The U23 World Wrestling Championships 2024 was organized by the world wrestling governing body United World Wrestling (UWW) and hosted by Albania in Tirana.
• India sent a 30-member wrestling team for the Tirana Championship.

India wins 24 medals at the Japan Para-Badminton International 2024

• Indian para-badminton players delivered an impressive performance at the Japan Para-Badminton Internationals 2024 by winning 24 medals- 6 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze.
• The Japan Para-Badminton Internationals 2024 was held in Tokyo, Japan. It was a level 2 category Para-Badminton tournament.
• Sivarajan Solaimalai and Sukant Kadam lead Indian medals rush
• The Paralympians Sivarajan Solaimalai and Sukant Kadam led the Indian medal charge at the Tokyo event.

Afghanistan A defeats Sri Lanka A to lift the 2024 Emerging Asia Cup

• The Afghanistan A men’s cricket team defeated the Sri Lankan A side by seven wickets to win the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024.
• The Asian Cricket Council organised the 6th ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup at Al Almerat, Oman.
• It was for the first time that the ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup was held in T20 format.
• It was the first title win for Afghanistan’s A team in the ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Afghanistan team made it to the final by defeating India A in the semi-final, while Sri Lanka A team defeated Pakistan Shaheens in the other semi-final.
• The regular test players of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan do not participate in the ACC Emerging Team Asia Cup tournament.
