India’s first underground transformer unveiled in Bangalore
- The first underground transformer in the country was inaugurated at Malleswaram, Bangalore.
- The 500 kVA transformer has been commissioned as a joint project between Bescom and BBMP.
- The transformer is expected to bring down the impact due to accidents and reduce losses during transmission.
- This ambitious initiative will not only enhance the safety of the urban environment but also encourage citizens to utilize footpaths without disruptions during maintenance works on overhead cables and related equipment.
“One Sun, One World, One Grid” conference held in New Delhi

- In the run-up to the 18th G20 Summit, a one-day conference themed “Transnational Grid Interconnections for One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG)” convened in New Delhi.
- The conference, spearheaded by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a ‘Maharatna’ company under the Ministry of Power.
- OSOWOG has the potential to make round-the-clock renewable energy more cost-effective, reducing the need for energy reserves and ultimately lowering electricity costs for the populace while ensuring energy access to millions who currently lack it.
Amazon India inks pact with 5 states to empower PwDs
- Amazon India has signed a pact with five state governments to engage with employable Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and enable their participation in the mainstream workforce.
- These states are Haryana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
- The memorandum of understanding which extends until 2026 aims to provide skilling and employment opportunities to PwD candidates in the five states.
- The opportunities will be provided across Amazon’s Operations Network, that is fulfilment centres, sortation centres and delivery stations for various roles, including stowing, picking, packing, and sorting among other roles.
3-day Climate Resilient Agriculture workshop concludes in Hyderabad
- The G20 Technical Workshop on “Climate Resilient Agriculture” commenced in Hyderabad, India.
- It has organized by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
- This three-day workshop aims to facilitate discussions on climate change challenges and foster international cooperation to enhance countries’ abilities to address these climate-related agricultural issues.
- The workshop has drawn participants from G20 member states, guest-invited countries, and international organizations, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant ministries
- Agriculture, being one of the most climate-sensitive sectors, is significantly impacted by climate change, which is already affecting G20 nations. The impacts, including increased climatic extremes like droughts and floods, pose risks to food security and agricultural production worldwide.
- The workshop’s agenda includes discussions on upscaling climate-resilient agriculture case studies and experiences, policy considerations, financial aspects, and institutional requirements.

Jharkhand Cabinet approves 1k pension for transgender community
- With an aim to provide social security and bring them into the mainstream of society, the Jharkhand government has decided to add the transgender community under its universal pension scheme.
- The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The government also decided to include them under the backward class category and provide them the benefits.
- The proposal of Mukhyamantri Rajya Samajik Suraksha Pension Yojana for transgender people under the social assistance scheme. The eligible beneficiary will get Rs 1,000 per month as financial aid.
- According to the Department of Women, Child Development and Social Security (WCDSS), the transgender population was around 11,900 in Jharkhand in 2011, which currently would be nearly 14,000.

African Union becomes Permanent Member of G20 Under India’s Presidency

- During the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the African Union (AU) had been granted permanent membership in the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) worldwide.
- The African Union (AU) is a significant organization consisting of 55 member states, collectively representing the nations across the African continent.
- The G20 was established in 1999 as a response to various global economic crises.
- The G20 member nations collectively account for approximately 85 percent of the world’s GDP, more than 75 percent of global trade, and roughly two-thirds of the global population.
- In addition to the recent addition, the G20 is made up of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union (EU).

India launches ‘Hello UPI’ for conversational payments
- The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched two conversational payment initiatives that are aimed at increasing convenience and accessibility for users.
- ‘Hello UPI’ allows users to make payments by engaging in conversations with their smartphones — whether it’s splitting a restaurant bill, sending money to a friend, or settling utility bills.
- The introduction of conversational UPI payments will augment user experience by enabling them to make voice-enabled UPI payments via UPI Apps, telecom calls, and IoT devices in Hindi and English, and will soon be available in several other regional languages.
- The NPCI has partnered with the Bhashini program, AI4Bharat at IIT Madras, to co-develop Hindi and English payment language models
- NPCI also launched ‘Bharat BillPay Connect’, an initiative aimed at effortless bill payments through conversations.
- ‘Bharat BillPay Connect’ enables users to pay their bills through natural conversations with popular voice assistants like Alexa or via feature phones, smartphones, or merchant soundboxes.

INS Sumedha participates in ‘Exercise Bright Star-23’ in Egypt

- INS Sumedha arrived at Port Alexandria, Egypt to participate in ‘Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23.’
- This edition of the multinational Tri-Services military exercise will see participation from 34 countries. It is the largest-ever joint military exercise in the Middle East & North Africa region.
- Ex Bright Star 23 is scheduled to be conducted in two phases. The Harbour Phase involves wide-ranging activities such as cross-deck visits, professional exchanges, sports fixtures, and interactions for planning and conduct of the Sea Phase.
- The Sea Phase will include complex and high-intensity exercises encompassing cross-deck flying, anti-surface, and anti-air exercises including live weapon firing drills.
- This is the maiden participation of the Indian Navy in Ex Bright Star, which will also see participation of Naval ships from other Friendly Foreign Navies.
- The exercises will span over two weeks with intense operations and training, aimed at reaffirming the ability of the participating navies to operate together as an integrated force and to highlight their shared commitment to maritime security and global stability through collaborative training and mutual understanding.
Phase II of bilateral exercise ‘Varuna 2023’ conducted in Arabian Sea

- Phase II of the 21st edition of the Varuna (Varuna-23) bilateral exercise between the Indian and French Navy was conducted in the Arabian Sea.
- The exercise witnessed the participation of guided missile frigates, tanker, Maritime Patrol Aircraft and integral helicopters from the two sides.
- Units of both navies endeavored to enhance and hone their fighting skills, improve interoperability and demonstrate their ability to promote, peace, security, and stability in the region.
- The first phase of ‘Varuna-2023’ was conducted off India’s Western Seaboard from January 16 to 20, this year.
- The bilateral exercise of the Indian and French navies was initiated in 1993. The exercise was later christened as ‘Varuna’ in 2001 and has since become a hallmark of robust India-France strategic bilateral relationship.

Japan successfully launches XRISM research satellite
- Japan has successfully launched a rocket carrying a new research satellite to unravel the evolution of the universe and space-time.
- The H2A rocket carrying the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) satellite and the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) was launched at the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima.
- The Japanese space agency is leading the mission in collaboration with NASA. The European Space Agency contributed to the telescope’s construction, which means that astronomers from Europe will be allotted a portion of the telescope’s observing time.
- XRISM is a rebuild of the Hitomi mission, a JAXA spacecraft that launched in 2016. The Hitomi telescope spun out of control weeks into its mission, and Japan lost contact with the spacecraft.
- SLIM also has a lightweight design that could be favorable as agencies plan more frequently.

Indian men’s team finishes with bronze medal at Asian TTC
- In Table Tennis, the Indian men’s team finished with a bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2023 following a semi-final defeat to Chinese Taipei in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea.
- The Indian men’s table tennis team comprising Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai, and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran lost 0-3 in their final four match.
- The two losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze medals at the competition. The Asian Table Tennis Championships 2023 was also a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

- This day is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).
- It was established in 2003 in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO).
- The day was first established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and is now observed by over 40 countries around the world.
- Suicide is a serious public health issue that affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. According to WHO, there are 700 000 suicides per year worldwide.
Obituary
SPG Chief Arun Kumar Sinha passed away
- Arun Kumar Sinha, director of the Special Protection Group (SPG), responsible for the security of Prime Minister Modi, passed away at the age of 61 in Gurugram.
- Sinha was an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1987 Kerala cadre.
- He assumed the role of Director of SPG in March 2016 and was initially appointed on a contract basis, with a tenure of up to May 31, 2024, in the rank and compensation of Director General of Police.
