India and UNICEF launched ‘Green Rising’ at COP28

In Dubai, during the COP28 summit, United Nations Children’s Fund( UNICEF) and Ministry of Environment, Forest and climate change of India, jointly launched Green Rising initiative to encourage youth to drive climate change.

This is a collaborative effort of UNICEF’s Generation limited, Green Rising India Alliance, a diverse network of private and public enterprises and young partners around the world. The Green Rising initiative addresses the climate change issue and came into effect to mold youngsters towards addressing the severe impacts of climate change across the world.

The COP28, a yearly meeting that brings together leaders, scientists, environmentalists, activists, business figures, and others, is taking place in the Emirates this year from November 30 to December 12.

Objective of Green Rising initiative:

The main objective behind this initiative is to encourage young people so that they can willingly participate and address the impact of climate change.

The same concept of Green Rising initiative can be seen in India. The YuWaah campaign is also dedicated to climate change and inspires young people to drive environmental action regarding climate change.

Some remarkable announcements during COP28:

• This time COP28 summit is highly ambitious towards climate change. In the first seven days, it mobilized around 83 billion dollars to pave the way for robust climate change initiatives. Green Rising is one of them.
• The summit has also taken remarkable steps regarding food systems, renewable energy power, health and efficiency and decarbonization of heavy-emitting industries. Around 726 dollars were mobilized for the Loss and Damage fund to climate crises.
• Some other important financial packages were also announced in the COP28 summit in Dubai such as 133.6 million dollars for adaptation fund ,129.3 million dollars for Least Developed Countries Fund. 3.5 billion dollars were also allocated for the Climate fund.
• ALTERRA Fund is also launched during COP28 to climate change. The United Arab Emirates announced its commitment to contribute $30 billion to a new fund focused on addressing climate issues. This fund, called Alterra, has influential partners like BlackRock, Brookfield, and TPG joining in as initial supporters.
• Alterra aims to attract $250 billion in investments by 2030. Its main focus is to enhance access to funding, particularly for developing nations in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania, collectively known as the Global South.
• The fund also aims to guide private markets towards investments that tackle climate challenges. It will be actively involved in areas such as transitioning to cleaner energy, reducing industrial carbon emissions and advancing climate technology.

Conclusion:

Many world institutions,big countries’ alliances are coming forward to address climate change. The World Bank has also announced a 9 billion dollars fund to climate change. Along with that Multilateral Development Banks also stated commitment to climate change by funding around 22.6 billion dollars to climate related projects. These are some great initiatives towards climate change.
