India Tests First Hydrogen Train: A Step Towards Green Railways

Successful Test Conducted

  • ICF Chennai: On July 25, 2025, Indian Railways took a big step toward clean and green energy by testing a hydrogen-powered train coach at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
  • Minister’s Announcement: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the good news on social media, saying that India is moving forward in using clean and modern fuel for trains.
  • Elite Club: After this test, India joined countries like Germany and Japan, which already have hydrogen-powered trains running.

Coach and Train Details

  • Driving Power Car: The coach that was tested is known as a Driving Power Car, which means it pulls the train forward using hydrogen fuel.
  • High Horsepower: This hydrogen train will have 1,200 horsepower (HP), making it one of the strongest hydrogen-powered trains in the world.
  • Made in India: All parts of the train coach were designed and made in India by Indian Railways engineers.

Green Energy Goals

  • Zero Emissions: This train does not release any smoke or harmful gases—only water vapour comes out, which makes it safe for the environment.
  • Diesel Replacement: Indian Railways wants to stop using diesel engines and use these clean trains instead, especially where electric lines are not available.

Planned Rollout

  • Pilot Project Cost: For this first run, the government is spending around ₹111.83 crore to set up fuel stations and other things needed for the train.

  • Hydrogen for Heritage: Indian Railways also plans to run 35 hydrogen trains on hill and heritage routes, which are popular for tourists.
  • Route Upgrades: For every route, about ₹70 crore will be spent to make stations and fuel points ready for the hydrogen trains.
  • Coach Cost: Each new hydrogen-powered train will cost around ₹80 crore to build.

Cost and Efficiency

  • Initial Investment: In the beginning, these trains cost more money because fuel cells and the technology are new.
  • Fuel Savings: In the future, as more hydrogen is produced and used, the cost of fuel will go down.
  • Operational Costs: Over time, the total running and repair cost of hydrogen trains is expected to become less than diesel trains.

Global Comparisons

  • Germany and Japan: Countries like Germany and Japan already run hydrogen trains. Now India has joined them.
  • Indigenous Development: India is not buying this train from other countries. It is making it on its own, using Indian technology.
  • Developing World Leader: This makes India a leader among developing countries in using clean fuel in trains.

Next Steps Ahead

  • Train Assembly: The full hydrogen train will have 2 engine-like power coaches and 8 passenger coaches.
