Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain 2024 Campaign is launched by Ministry of Jal Shakti

The Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has recently on 9th March 2024, launched the”Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain” campaign 2024. It is the fifth edition of the campaign. The launch of Catch the Rain Campaign was scheduled to be held at the NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi.

Theme:

The theme of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan:Catch the Rain Campaign 2024 is Nari Shakti se Jal Shakti. This theme revolves around the role of Women in water Conservation as well as water management. The conducting body of the Catch the Rain Campaign is the National Water Mission, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation in collaboration with the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation.

The Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also launched two books related to water Conservation and management. The names of these books are as following-

• Jal Shakti Abhiyan 2019 to 2023- The Journey for Sustainable Water Future.
• 101 glimpse of Women Power: Through the prism of Jal Jeevan Mission.

The auspicious Jal Kalash ceremony was held at the beginning of the event. This Jal Kalash ceremony resembles the collective commitment for water Conservation, water management and the sustainable use of water in the future.

During the event two short films on the importance of water Conservation and one documentary of Ladakh were also screened at the event and made it more significant. These two short films are as follow:

• Jal Shakti Abhiyan 2019 to 2023 – A public led movement marching towards Water Security
• Short films of Jal Jeevan Mission

During the event Women water warriors coming from various backgrounds had shared their experience ,stories, success and challenges on the way of water Conservation.

Focused area of the Campaign:

There are some major focused areas of the Catch the Rain Campaign 2024. These are as following:

• water conservation and rainwater harvesting
• Enumerating, geo-tagging & making inventory of all water bodies; preparation of scientific plans for water conservation
• Setting up of Jal Shakti Kendras in all districts
• Intensive afforestation
• Awareness generation

Key aspects of the Campaign:

Apart from the above mentioned important Interventions of the JSA:CTR 2024 Campaign, there are also some key aspects of the campaign and these are as following:

• Focus on Desilting and cleaning of water bodies
• Revitalizing Abandoned/Defunct Borewells for groundwater recharge
• Geo-tagging of water bodies, coupled with meticulous mapping and regular updates in the State’s revenue records
• Intensified afforestation efforts in the catchment areas of water bodies,
• Snow harvesting in hilly areas like stupas in Ladakh for conserving water
• Rejuvenation of Small Rivers.

Conclusion:

Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain Campaign is an ambitious initiative of the Jal Shakti Ministry. It was started in 2019 and this year it is the fifth edition of the campaign. In the year of 2020, it couldn’t be scheduled due to covid 19. The fifth edition of this campaign started from 9th March 2024 and will complete on 30th November 2024.
