PM Modi and PM Wong Inaugurate Mumbai Port Phase-II
- What happened: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong joined through video to open Phase-II of PSA Mumbai (Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal, BMCT) on 4 September 2025. With this, India’s largest container terminal is now fully ready. It can handle 8 million containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in a year.
- Where: At Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Nhava Sheva, Navi Mumbai.
Why it matters
- Bigger and faster: The new part of the terminal doubles the capacity and allows several large ships to be handled at the same time. This will make India stronger in world trade routes.
- India–Singapore friendship: The opening happened along with new talks between India and Singapore. Both countries launched a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership plan, showing they want to work more together in shipping, trade and other areas.
Key specifications (Phase-II)
- Capacity: Now the terminal can handle 8 million containers per year.
- Berth length: 2,000 metres long quay, so more than one big ship can be parked and worked on at the same time.
- Area: Covers about 200 hectares of land.
- Rail link: Has six railway tracks that are ready for the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). These connect the port to more than 63 Inland Container Depots (ICDs) inside the country. Once the Western DFC fully connects to JN Port, movement of goods will become much faster.
- Ship size: Can take in ships as big as 18,000 containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit).
- Equipment: The new phase added advanced cranes and machines to load and unload containers quickly. Local authorities stated that the terminal is equipped with 24 quay cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, as well as rail cranes and dedicated rail tracks.
Investment and FDI
- Project cost: Around SGD 1.7 billion (about USD 1.3 billion). This was done under a public–private partnership.
- From Singapore: This is the biggest foreign investment from Singapore in India so far.
Connectivity boost
- Better by rail: The DFC-ready rail lines inside the port will help goods travel quickly to North and Central India. When the Western DFC link is done, companies will get faster and more reliable transport.
- Main gateway: The long quay and deep water allow more big ships to come directly to Mumbai port, reducing the need for goods to go through other ports first.
Sustainability and jobs
- Green energy: The terminal is already using renewable power for its electric machines, and diesel machines are being replaced step by step.
- Jobs created: Over 1,500 skilled jobs have been created for local people.
- First of its kind: JN Port officials said BMCT is India’s first container terminal fully running on renewable energy.
India–Singapore deliverables linked to the launch
- Shipping corridor: A Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) will be built between Singapore and Indian ports.
- Fintech tie-up: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) signed an agreement for cooperation in banking and digital payments.
- Aviation training: Both sides agreed to work together in civil aviation training.
- Space cooperation: New plans were made for space sector collaboration.
- Manufacturing centre: A National Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing will be set up in Chennai.
What changes for shippers and the economy
- Handling bigger ships: The 2 km quay allows many large ships to be worked on together, reducing waiting time and improving schedules.
- Faster movement inside India: The six DFC-ready rail lines connected to 63+ ICDs will make transport to inland cities quicker and smoother when the Western DFC is complete.
- Maharashtra on top: Officials said this project makes Maharashtra the leading state in India for container handling. JNPA now has the biggest container capacity in the country.
The bigger picture
- National plan: The project supports the PM Gati Shakti plan for modern and integrated transport across India. It is also shown as a good example of government and private company partnership between PSA and JNPA.
- Future outlook: With Phase-II now open and the DFC link coming soon, India will get better direct connections with global trade routes, faster movement of goods inside the country, and cleaner port operations. The closer ties with Singapore under the new plan and the Green and Digital Shipping Corridor will push India’s trade power even further.
