BJP Secures Landslide Victory in the Capital

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 48 seats in the Delhi Assembly election, marking its return to power in the capital after 26 years and ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) bid for a fourth consecutive term.
  • The AAP secured 22 seats, while the Congress failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election, with most of its candidates losing their deposits.
  • The election, held on February 5, saw a close contest in vote share between the BJP and AAP, with only a 2% difference despite the BJP’s significant seat gain from 8 to 48.
  • AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost their respective seats to BJP candidates Parvesh Verma (New Delhi) and Tarvinder Singh Marwah (Jangpura), while Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat by defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri.
  • Celebrations erupted at BJP offices as early trends indicated the party’s comfortable majority, surpassing the required 36-seat mark.
  • Kejriwal had previously resigned as Chief Minister in September after securing bail and campaigned on a promise of proving his honesty, stating he would not assume office without electoral validation.
  • Accepting the results, Kejriwal reiterated that AAP’s mission was public service, not power, and pledged to function as a constructive opposition while continuing to serve society.
  • The BJP focused its campaign on the promise of a “double engine” government, assuring voters that welfare schemes like free electricity and water would not only continue but improve.
  • The party criticized AAP for unfulfilled promises, corruption allegations against its leaders, and excessive spending on Kejriwal’s official residence renovations.
  • The BJP campaigned without a declared Chief Ministerial candidate, seeking votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and must now appoint a leader to fulfill its commitments.

₹500-Crore Fund Grants Autonomy to National Mission on Manuscripts

  • The government has initiated steps to make the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) autonomous by allocating nearly ₹500 crore over the next six years through a Special Finance Committee.
  • Established in February 2003 by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, NMM is dedicated to discovering and preserving India’s vast manuscript heritage.
  • From this year, NMM has been placed under a Central sector scheme, where all its initiatives will be fully funded and implemented by the central government.
  • Previously functioning under the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), the mission’s funds were routed through the Sahitya Akademi from January to March.
  • The Special Finance Committee has approved an allocation of ₹491.66 crore for NMM until 2031, ensuring financial stability for its initiatives.
  • There is uncertainty regarding whether the newly announced ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission’ for manuscripts will be integrated into NMM or function as a separate entity.
  • As per the Union Budget, the Gyan Bharatam Mission aims to cover over one crore manuscripts through survey, documentation, and conservation efforts.
  • The initiative will focus on preserving India’s manuscript heritage housed in academic institutions, museums, libraries, and private collections.
  • Reports from October indicated that the Union Culture Ministry planned to revive and restructure NMM into an autonomous body to enhance ancient text preservation efforts.
