• In December 2023, the inflation was expectedly four months higher as per the consumer price Index data.
• Food prices gained fast pace in the month of December and inflation due to cereals and pulses behaved stubbornly.
• Headline inflation in the month of December 2023 was 14 basis point higher than the last month, reaching at 5.69% and price gains in food prices was 83 basis point higher than the last month stood at 9.53%.
• The main contributor in the rise of food prices was cereals- the biggest constituent of the ‘food and beverages’ group, which was responsible for 9.93% inflation.
• The two main cereals jowar and bajra, which are highly consumed by the people in the rural hinterland, have shown price gains by 63 and 106 basis point higher than the last month respectively.
• Pulses,a key protein source in vegetarian households, has witnessed 43 months of high price gains at 20.7%.
• If we compare year on year basis, tomatoes and onions again gained prices by over 33% and 74% from December 2022.
• However, the vegetable prices saw sequential deflation at 5.3% when we compared to last month.
• The price of potatoes, oninons and tomatoes saw a contraction by 5.9%, 16% and 9.4%, respectively from November 2023.
• Still, the average price gains of major food items was high in the month of December 2023.
• Food price gains is one of the biggest challenges in front of the policymakers to curb the inflation.
• The mostly households expenditure goes on food as these food prices are continued to rise, there is a huge risk on already weak consumption in the country.
