• The Centre has recently approved the Chandrayaan-5 mission to study the Moon, as announced by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan.
• During an event celebrating his appointment as ISRO Chairman, Narayanan stated that Chandrayaan-5 would carry a 250-kg rover, unlike Chandrayaan-3, which carried the 25-kg rover ‘Pragyaan’.
• The Chandrayaan missions focus on studying the lunar surface, with Chandrayaan-1 (2008) successfully conducting chemical, mineralogical, and photo-geologic mapping of the Moon.
• Chandrayaan-2 (2019) was 98% successful, though a small portion of the mission failed in the final stages. Despite this, its high-resolution camera continues to capture and send hundreds of images.
