Afghanistan reports 400 deaths in Pakistani airstrike on Kabul hospital

  • Rescue teams continued to find more bodies from the destroyed drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul on Tuesday. Officials said that an overnight airstrike killed more than 400 people, showing a serious increase in the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which is now in its third week.
  • Pakistan denied the accusation made by Afghanistan that it targeted the hospital. It said that its airstrikes—also carried out in eastern Afghanistan on Monday—were aimed only at military locations, and it called the claims of hundreds of deaths false propaganda. At the same time, people were searching for their loved ones among the injured and dead, but the exact number of casualties could not be independently confirmed.
  • The conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan has included frequent cross-border attacks and airstrikes inside Afghanistan, while calls from the international community for a ceasefire have not been accepted.
  • Pakistan claims that Afghanistan is giving safe shelter to militants, especially the Pakistani Taliban, who carry out attacks inside Pakistan. These militants are separate but closely connected to the Afghan Taliban, which came to power in 2021 after U.S. forces withdrew. However, Afghanistan has denied these allegations.
  • Afghanistan’s deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said in a late-night post that the airstrike hit the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, which has around 2,000 beds, at about 9 p.m. local time, and large parts of the building were destroyed.
  • Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani said on Tuesday that 408 people were killed and 265 were injured.
  • Television footage from the night showed security forces using flashlights to carry injured and dead bodies, while firefighters were trying hard to control the fire.
  • The Omid hospital had been renamed and expanded about a year ago from the Ibn Sina Drug Addiction Treatment Hospital as part of efforts to fight drug addiction in the country.
  • The hospital is located near Kabul’s international airport and next to a former NATO base called Camp Phoenix, where U.S. forces once trained Afghan soldiers. After the Taliban took control, the base came under the new government, but its current use is not clearly known.
  • A reporter from Associated Press who was near the area said he heard a military jet flying overhead followed by a very loud explosion.
  • Pakistan’s Information Ministry said that its military had accurately targeted Camp Phoenix, which it claimed had become a storage place for weapons and military equipment used by terrorists.
  • The ministry also said that the hospital was several kilometres away from the camp and accused Afghan officials of spreading false information. It also pointed out that Google Maps shows another location east of Kabul also named Camp Phoenix.
  • It questioned why a drug rehabilitation hospital would be located near a dangerous military storage area, saying that this question has still not been answered.
  • Afghan spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid strongly condemned the attack and accused Pakistan of targeting hospitals and civilian areas to create fear and destruction. He said that the people who died were innocent civilians and patients.
  • He called the attack a crime against humanity and said it violated all accepted international rules and principles.

Israel claims Iran security chief Ali Larijani killed in strike

  • Ali Larijani, who was the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a very powerful leader after Khamenei, was reportedly killed in an overnight airstrike, according to claims made by Israel’s military and Defence Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday.
  • The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said that Larijani was one of the most experienced and senior leaders in Iran and had a close relationship with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
  • The IDF also claimed that during the January protests in Iran, Larijani personally controlled the violent crackdown on protestors, calling it a mass killing of civilians.
  • The Iranian government has not confirmed or denied these claims about his death.
  • After the reported killing of Ali Khamenei on February 28 in a joint strike by Israel and the U.S., Larijani became a strong and leading voice of the Iranian government.
  • He openly rejected any talks with the United States and said that Iran would strongly retaliate against its enemies in the early stage of the conflict.
  • On March 13, Larijani was seen at a public rally in Tehran, where he spoke to the media and again said that Iran would not give up or surrender.
  • Soon after Israel announced his death, messages appeared on his Telegram and X (Twitter) accounts, including a photo of a handwritten note said to be from him.
  • In that message, he paid tribute to Iranian sailors who died in a U.S. airstrike on a naval ship near Sri Lanka on March 4.
  • He described their deaths as sacrifices made by a proud nation fighting against global enemies, and said their memory would stay forever in the hearts of the people and would make the country’s military even stronger in the future.
  • In another statement, the IDF said it had also killed Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the Basij Force, along with his deputy and other senior officials.
  • The IDF said that the Basij Force played a major role in controlling and suppressing protests inside Iran, especially during recent demonstrations.
  • Larijani was known as a trusted advisor of Ali Khamenei and also a close associate of Mojtaba Khamenei, the current Supreme Leader.
  • He had a PhD in Western philosophy and a long political career. He served as the head of Iran’s national broadcasting organisation for 10 years and later became the Speaker of Parliament.
  • In 2024, President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed him as the Secretary of the National Security Council.

Both the government and the public must remain flexible in their demands, Sonam Wangchuk

  • After being released from jail, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said that he wants a proper legal closure of his case. He also said that “language misunderstandings” might have been one reason for his arrest under the National Security Act (NSA) for 170 days.
  • He was released on Saturday from Jodhpur Central Jail after the Union Home Ministry cancelled the NSA order using special administrative powers, which are rarely used.
  • He expressed hope that the Supreme Court would still give its judgment, even after his release, so that it can guide future governments on how to use and how not to misuse such laws (NSA).
  • After violence in Leh on September 24, 2025, where four people died during protests, Wangchuk was arrested under the NSA. The protest was about demanding Statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
  • The NSA is a law that allows the government to keep someone in jail without trial for up to one year.
  • His wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, challenged his arrest in the Supreme Court. He was finally released on March 14, just a few days before the court was going to give its decision.
  • Wangchuk said that the government did not put any conditions on his release, and even if they had, he was ready to stay in jail for 12–24 months.
  • Responding to people who called him “anti-national,” he said that his movement is not for personal benefit, but to protect the culture and environment of Ladakh. He added that if these demands are not fulfilled, the movement will continue.
  • He also said that he was forcefully taken and put in jail, and for almost a week, he was not allowed to contact his family or lawyers.
  • He thanked his wife and his legal team, led by Vivek Tankha, for fighting his case strongly.
  • He said that both the government and the people need to stay flexible in their demands, because discussions are a give-and-take process, and both sides must understand each other.
  • He also warned that delays in talks will make it harder to reach solutions.
  • He said that he never wanted to protest, but was forced to do so, and added that people should work together and set a good example instead of protesting.
  • Finally, he again said that “language misunderstandings” were the main reason behind his arrest.
