  • Industry bodies in India have welcomed this bill enthusiastically. This bill promotes ease of doing business and streamlines their regulatory landscape.
  • This Telecommunications Bill 2023 also gives regulatory stability and provides a better environment to expand the telecom industry in the next phase.
  • Some issues still persist such as the expansive definition of telecom industry makes it difficult to protect privacy and confidentiality. It raises the concern of surveillance.
  • The Telecommunications bill also tries to simplify and deal with these privacy concerns but the solutions it proposed also compromise privacy.
  • There are two major issues which can not be avoided such as surveillance reforms and internet shutdowns. These have massive implications and also are controversial.
  • Government should address these major issues related to the telecom industry and provide solutions with an open mind.
  • The telecom industry has evolved dramatically after the Telegraph act first passed in the 19th century.
  • With this digital inclusivity there are many concerns regarding privacy and surveillance have been raised and these need to be addressed.
