The incident occurred within the North Eastern Railway’s jurisdiction (NER),” said Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer for the Northeast Frontier Railway.
  • Tribhuvan Narayan, the loco-pilot, is safe. He and other passengers reportedly heard a loud explosion moments before the derailment of the eight coaches.
  • According to Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner G.S. Naveen Kumar, a 40-member medical team and 15 ambulances arrived at the scene, with further medical teams and ambulances also sent out.
  • The Union Railway Ministry has ordered a high-level committee to investigate the incident, in addition to an inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.
  • Railway officials indicated that it is too soon to draw definitive conclusions, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Experts noted that various factors could have contributed to the derailment, including defects in the tracks or the bogies.
  • Due to the accident, all up-and-down movement along the line was halted, leading to the cancellation of two passenger trains between Gonda and Gorakhpur and the diversion of 11 trains. Affected passengers were transported by bus to Mankapur station, where the Railways arranged a special rake to take them to the train’s final destination in Dibrugarh, Assam.
  • In a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma mentioned that he is closely monitoring the situation and that teams are on standby to provide support.
  • The railways have announced an increased ex-gratia amount of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh for those with grievous injuries, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Two militants were killed and soldiers were injured during combing operations in Doda and Kupwara

  • Two unidentified militants were killed and two soldiers were injured during security forces’ combing operations in the jungles of Doda in Jammu and along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara, Kashmir, on Thursday, as they searched for hiding militants.
  • Under ‘Operation Rajbir,’ the Army reported successfully thwarting an infiltration attempt in the Keran Sector of Kupwara.
  • A spokesperson said, “The infiltration attempt was effectively stopped with the removal of two terrorists along the LoC in the Keran sector.”
  • The anti-infiltration operation continued throughout the day. Earlier, two soldiers were injured during a search operation in Doda district, sustaining bullet wounds in an exchange of fire in the Kastigarh area, which is surrounded by dense forests, around 2 a.m.
  • This marked the third confrontation between militants and security forces in Doda district over the past three days.
  • Deputy Inspector General Shridhar Patil stated, “A unified search effort involving all security forces is actively underway in Doda. The operation is ongoing.” Official sources reported that the militants managed to escape from the encounter site for the third time after a firefight.
  • The Army and J&K Police have been conducting combing operations in Doda since militants increased their attacks in the second week of June. The surge in militancy has resulted in 24 deaths in Jammu, including 10 security personnel.
  • On Thursday, several Congress leaders and workers staged a protest in Jammu demanding action against rising terror attacks and the restoration of statehood.
  • A Congress spokesperson said that senior party leaders, including Bharat Sinh Solanki, J&K Congress president Vikar Rasool Wani, and Congress secretary Manoj Yadav, were “taken into custody” while they were marching towards the Lieutenant Governor’s residence in Jammu.

Two policemen died in a bomb explosion in Chhattisgarh

  • Two Chhattisgarh police constables were killed and four others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Bijapur, located in the Naxalite-affected Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, late Wednesday, according to the police.
  • The police constables were carrying out a search operation in the Mandimarka forests of the Thana Tarrem area when the explosion happened. All six policemen were members of the Special Task Force, a specialized unit designated for such operations.
  • According to a police statement, “After receiving reports about Maoists from the Darbha Division, West Bastar Division, and Military Company No. 2 in the border region of Bijapur, Dantewada, and Sukma districts, a joint operation was carried out on July 16, 2024, by teams from STF, DRG, CoBRA, and CRPF. During the operation, two STF personnel were martyred and four others were injured in an IED explosion.”
  • The deceased include Constable Satter Singh from Narayanpur and Constable Bharat Lal Sahu from Raipur. The injured are Head Constable Purushottam Nag and Constables Sanjay Mandavi, Komal Yadav, and Siyaram Shori. The police statement added, “The treatment of the injured personnel is ongoing, and their condition is stable.”
