Rajdhani Express Strikes Elephant Herd, 7 Killed in Assam
- Seven wild elephants were killed and one baby elephant was badly injured after the Mizoram–New Delhi Rajdhani Express hit a herd in Assam’s Hojai district early on Saturday. The accident also caused the train to derail.
- The crash caused the engine and five coaches of Train number 20507, the Sairang Rajdhani Express, to come off the tracks in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under the Lumding Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway, officials said later on Saturday.
- Railway officials said no passengers were hurt in the accident. Passengers were shifted to empty seats in other coaches, and later the train continued its journey towards Guwahati.
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a full investigation into the incident. He also asked the Forest Department to improve safety measures in wildlife movement areas, especially during seasons with poor visibility, calling the incident very upsetting.
- The injured elephant calf, which was only a few days old, was taken to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation near Kaziranga National Park. Doctors there said the calf’s condition was still very serious.
- The Northeast Frontier Railway said the place where the accident happened, around 126 kilometres east of Guwahati, is not officially marked as an elephant corridor, even though there are nearly 80 such corridors in the railway’s operational area.
- Railway officials explained that the train driver applied emergency brakes after seeing the elephants, but the animals still ran into the moving train, causing the derailment and the deaths of the elephants.
- Assam’s Forest and Environment Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary described the deaths as very serious and asked senior officials to work closely with Indian Railways to stop such accidents from happening again.
- Bibhab Talukdar from Aaranyak, a wildlife conservation group based in Assam, said there must be better coordination between the Railways and the Forest Department to track elephant movement and avoid similar accidents, especially during the winter months.
U.S. calls for India to align its nuclear norms with global standards
- Two days after Parliament passed the SHANTI Bill, which allows private companies to take part in nuclear power and limits the liability of nuclear operators to ₹3,000 crore, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) on Friday.
- The NDAA advises the U.S. Secretary of State to work with the Indian government so that India’s nuclear liability rules match international rules for civilian nuclear cooperation.
- The NDAA is passed every year and decides how the U.S. defence budget will be spent. The version for the October 2025 to September 2026 period includes some points related to India.
- One part of the NDAA talks about setting up a joint consultation system under the U.S.-India Strategic Security Dialogue to review how the 2008 India–U.S. civil nuclear agreement is being carried out.
- The document clearly asks India to bring its nuclear liability laws in line with global standards. This reflects the worries of international nuclear companies, which want clear laws and less financial risk in case of accidents.
- Parliament passed the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, even though the Opposition demanded it be examined by a parliamentary committee and staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha.
- The SHANTI Bill moves India closer to global agreements like the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage and the Convention on Supplementary Compensation, which guide how nuclear accident compensation is handled worldwide.
- The NDAA 2026 encouraging this change shows a rare reference to India’s nuclear liability rules alongside the 2008 nuclear deal, something not seen in U.S. laws since at least 2016.
- Although India has appeared earlier in NDAAs for defence and security cooperation, this is the first time in recent years that India’s civil nuclear liability laws have been specifically mentioned.
- The Congress party criticised the government, saying the Bill was rushed to please the U.S. Jairam Ramesh claimed it weakened important parts of the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010.
- Jairam Ramesh mockingly called the SHANTI Act the “TRUMP Act,” saying it was made to satisfy President Trump by reducing concerns of foreign nuclear suppliers about accident-related costs.
- The SHANTI law allows private companies and possibly foreign investors to enter India’s nuclear sector. The aim is to increase nuclear power capacity while solving problems that earlier stopped foreign investment.
- The law removes the rule that made equipment suppliers legally responsible, meaning nuclear plant operators can no longer demand compensation from suppliers even if faulty parts cause an accident.
- Supplier liability has been a long-running issue and is often blamed for stopping U.S. and French nuclear companies from working in India, despite earlier promises of civil nuclear cooperation.
Bangladesh Tense as Funeral Held for Slain Leader
- Protests continued for the third day in Bangladesh as people demanded punishment for those responsible for killing youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. His funeral was held in Dhaka under tight security.
- Political parties and human rights groups warned that the ongoing unrest, which includes violence and arson, could be misused by certain groups to create instability and disrupt the elections planned for February 2026.
- Protesters accused Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury of failing to act, saying no arrests had been made even a week after Hadi was shot by attackers on a motorcycle in Dhaka on December 12.
- Tens of thousands of people from across Bangladesh attended Hadi’s funeral prayers at Manik Mia Avenue near Parliament. Dhaka Metropolitan Police deployed large numbers of personnel and used nearly 1,000 body cameras to manage the crowd.
- Abdullah Al Jaber of Inqilab Moncha, an organisation co-founded by Hadi, gave a 24-hour deadline demanding the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser, blaming him for poor administration and lack of accountability.
- After Hadi was buried at 3.48 p.m., mourners marched towards Shahbagh intersection, shouting slogans like “Inquilab Zindabad” and “Delhi na Dhaka-Dhaka, Dhaka,” which increased the intensity of protests across the country.
- Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said Hadi would be remembered through his ideas. He said Hadi’s desire to contest elections showed the country how elections should be fair and democratic.
- Even though some areas appeared calm, worries remained after attacks on media houses and cultural centres. Newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star restarted printing after their offices were set on fire.
- Udichi Shilpi Gosthi said the interim government ignored warnings before an arson attack destroyed 55 years of cultural records. The group called it an attack on progressive culture and the values of the 1971 Liberation War.
- Amnesty International asked for fair and independent investigations into Hadi’s killing, mob violence, attacks on media, and the lynching of Hindu worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, after which police arrested ten people.
