Talking peace

• Recently, Switzerland has come forward to organize a peace conference to broaden the efforts to establish peace between Russia and Ukraine after two years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine happened.
• Switzerland is among those countries who have not joined the western coalition so far. Apparently, India is also part of that list instead of being a close partner of Russia, a member of BRICS and SCO ,a leader in the global south and of course a world leadership aspirant.
• Recent visits of Swiss government professionals and Ukrainian foreign ministers is evident that India will receive the invitation for the conference.
• The conference is scheduled to be held in the resort town of Burgenstock on June 15-16. The invitation has been sent to around 160 countries but only 50 have confirmed their attendance and these countries are mostly from the European Union , NATO alliance , G7 countries and some US allies such as Japan, Australia, and South Korea.
• In this conference Russia has not been invited yet.
• There is a chance that Prime Minister Narendra Modi or official nominees would attend the conference if he is re-elected.
• Despite the claim of Switzerland to become neutral it has imposed sanctions on Russia that is why it has already chosen its side in the current conflict.
• The important areas of the conference are to build a framework for peace insurance, food security, nuclear safety , freedom of navigation and humanitarian issues.
