Mamata Banerjee Declares ₹1.10 Lakh Assistance for Durga Puja Committees

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that every Durga Puja club will now get ₹1.10 lakh from the government. This is a 30% increase from last year, when the amount was ₹85,000.
  • She made this announcement before the upcoming state elections. Many opposition parties criticised this move, calling it a kind of “bribe” to get support during elections.
  • Mamata said that around 45,000 Durga Puja clubs are there in the state, and giving them this money will cost the government ₹495 crore in total.
  • She also asked electricity companies to give an 80% discount on power bills to the Puja clubs, to help them save money during the festival.
  • While speaking at an event in Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium, Mamata asked the crowd, “Last year it was ₹85,000, how much do you want this time?” Then she said, “Let’s fix it at ₹1.10 lakh.”
  • Mamata Banerjee spoke about the deep cultural importance of Durga Puja for the people of Bengal. She advised organisers to handle crowd control properly and not try to outdo each other just to attract bigger gatherings.
  • She advised clubs to use more volunteers and to make sure there are separate entry and exit points at Puja pandals, so people can move easily and safely.
  • This year, Durga Puja will be celebrated in the last week of September, and the grand Durga Puja Carnival is scheduled to take place in Kolkata on October 5.
  • Mamata also urged Puja organisers to extend help to migrant workers returning to Bengal from BJP-ruled states, saying that many of them faced mistreatment and now need care and support.
  • Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, said that Mamata Banerjee is free to give even ₹2 lakh to Durga Puja organisers if she wishes, but first she should clear the pending Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees.
  • He also said Mamata should increase the salaries of workers like Anganwadi staff, ICDS workers, civic police, and other contract workers, who are getting very low pay.
  • Adhikari further said that before the next elections, Mamata might also raise the monthly allowance of imams and muezzins by ₹500 to win their support.

U.P. Minister: No Schools Will Be Closed or Teachers Removed

  • In Uttar Pradesh, many people were upset over the state’s plan to merge schools with fewer students. In response, the government said clearly that no school will be permanently closed or merged.
  • The plan was to join about 10,000 small primary and upper primary schools that have very low student numbers. But this caused protests from opposition parties, teacher groups, parents, and students.
  • UP Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said in a press meeting that only schools with fewer than 50 students are being considered for merging. Even then, the process is not permanent.
  • If the number of students in these areas increases or if the merged school doesn’t have enough space, classes will be restarted in the original school buildings. The school’s ID numbers (called UDISE codes) will also stay the same.
  • Sandeep Singh added that if students have to travel far or face problems like crossing rivers or highways, the school mergers will be cancelled. The idea is to avoid making it hard for kids to reach school.
  • The minister said that this whole process — selecting schools, merging them, or undoing the mergers — will be completed within a week, and will be done with proper planning.
  • Schools located on opposite sides of rivers, railway tracks, or highways will not be merged. This is to make sure children and teachers don’t face danger or difficulty.
  • To calm fears about job losses, the minister said no teaching or support staff will lose their jobs. This includes teachers, headmasters, and even cooks.
  • He also said that if more teachers are needed after the merger, the government will hire new ones to keep a good balance between the number of students and teachers.
  • Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said the government made this U-turn because of public pressure. He called it a win for the ‘PDA Pathshala’ movement in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Bones Found at Burial Site in Dharmasthala

  • After digging at five different sites and finding nothing, police in Karnataka’s Dharmasthala town finally found bones at a sixth location on Thursday.
  • In total, they found 15 bones, but no skull. Some bones were broken. A forensic expert said the bones might be from a man, but tests will be done to confirm it.
  • Experts who study crime scenes carefully noted how the bones were found and then collected them as evidence. A senior government official, Stella Verghese, was present at the site.
  • The digging started after a former sanitation worker complained to police that over 100 people had been secretly buried in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014.
  • On July 28, the special investigation team (SIT) took the man to a bathing ghat in Dharmasthala, where he pointed out 13 places he claimed were used for secret burials. The digging began the following day.
  • Between July 29 and 30, officials excavated five of those spots but didn’t find anything. However, on Thursday morning, when they started digging at a sixth location in a forest near the Netravati river, they discovered human bones.
  • At the first site they had dug earlier, police came across a man’s PAN card and a woman’s debit card. Using the PAN card, they traced the man’s family.
  • The man was identified as Suresh from Nelamangala in Bengaluru Rural district. He had died of jaundice in March 2025, and his family had carried out his last rites in their hometown.
  • Police went to Suresh’s house to check. His father confirmed the PAN card was his. Officials also said Suresh was an alcoholic, which might explain how his card ended up at the site.
  • Police believe Suresh lost his PAN card during a visit to Dharmasthala before he died. The debit card recovered from the site belonged to his mother, who is currently alive.
