Manu’s historic bronze kickstarts India’s medal quest

At 22 years old, she has made history as the first Indian woman shooter to earn an Olympic medal, achieving a podium finish in the 10m air pistol event. She will now compete in the 10m pistol mixed team and 25m pistol events.

  • Three years ago, Manu Bhaker experienced a heartbreaking performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she did not secure a medal in any of the three events she competed in.
  • On Sunday in Chateauroux, the 22-year-old athlete, participating in her second Olympics, wiped away tears once more. However, this time they were tears of joy, as she concluded the women’s 10m air pistol event with a bronze medal, marking India’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Games.
  • The medal was the first ever achieved by an Indian woman shooter.
  • After qualifying for the final in third place, Manu started strong. Out of the 22 shots she took, only 7 landed in the ‘9’ ring.
  • She remained in medal contention throughout and held the silver medal position until her final shot of the competition, where she was narrowly edged out by South Korea’s Kim Yeji by just 0.1 points.
  • Another Korean, Ye Jin Oh, secured the gold medal.
  • Manu’s journey isn’t over yet; she will be competing in the women’s 10m pistol mixed team event on Monday and the women’s 25m pistol events later in the competition.

Two individuals were arrested the day after three IAS aspirants drowned in the basement of a Delhi coaching center

  • A day after three Civil Services aspirants drowned in the basement of a private coaching center, the Delhi Police arrested the coordinator and the building owner on Sunday, charging them with culpable homicide. The accused have been placed in judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
  • According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Shreya Yadav, 25, from Uttar Pradesh; Tanya Soni, 25, from Telangana; and Nevin Dalvin, 28, from Kerala.
  • Senior police officers reported that the basement was approximately eight feet below ground level and that more than 20 students were inside it on Saturday evening. Although the basement gate was closed, it was damaged when high-pressure water forced its way in, according to an officer.
  • Mayor Shelly Oberoi stated that Rau’s IAS Study Circle had been operating a library in the basement in contravention of the law.
  • Oberoi told the press that a drain in front of the building burst, causing a flash flood of water to pour into the basement and trap the students.
  • She and a representative from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi noted that none of the other buildings adjacent to the center had experienced flooding.
  • Later, the Corporation stated, “The alleged bursting of the drainage outside the coaching center is not definitive, and the matter is under investigation.”
  • Since this morning, students from coaching institutes and residential complexes have been protesting against the negligence that led to the deaths.
  • The Mayor ordered “immediate” action to be taken against all coaching centers operating commercial activities in basements, as this violates regulations. On Sunday evening, the Corporation sealed three basements operating illegally in the Rajinder Nagar area, according to an official statement.
  • Holding placards that read “Old Rajinder Nagar is not safe,” students expressed that such a disaster was inevitable. Many highlighted problems with the inadequate drainage systems and frequent waterlogging in basements.
  • The police have assembled several teams to investigate the incident and have requested the Delhi Fire Services to provide a report on the building and the basement, which was being used as a library but was labeled as a “store room,” according to a senior police officer.
  • An FIR was filed based on a sub-inspector’s statement, which indicated that the coaching centre owner, present during the incident, did not produce the necessary documents to operate a library in the basement.
  • The FIR includes charges under Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106(1) (death from rash or negligent acts), 115(2) (punishment for voluntarily causing harm), 290 (negligent conduct concerning building maintenance), and 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • Delhi Fire Services Chief Atul Garg stated that it took eight hours to fully pump the water out of the basement.
  • The coaching center stated that it is “dedicated to fully supporting the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.”

The NTA has released the CUET-UG results following a one-month delay

  • On Sunday, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results of the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate courses (CUET-UG).
  • The results were anticipated to be announced on June 30, but their release was postponed due to controversies surrounding the NTA.
  • The CUET-UG, conducted in a hybrid format for the first time across the country in May, faced a last-minute cancellation in Delhi due to “logistical reasons.” The exam was subsequently held in the national capital, with a retest administered to some students on July 19.
  • A total of 8,024 candidates achieved full marks in business studies, followed by 5,141 in political science, 2,520 in history, 1,683 in English, and 1,602 in psychology.
  • The largest number of students took the general test (7.09 lakh), and only one candidate achieved a perfect score. Every subject had at least one candidate who scored full marks.
  • In a press release, the NTA reported that 13,47,820 candidates had registered for the exam, with 11,13,610 actually appearing.
  • Many students pointed out discrepancies in the initial answer key, leading to corrections in the final version. The NTA stated, “From July 7 to 9, candidates were given the opportunity to challenge the Provisional Answer Key, Question Paper, and Recorded Responses. During this period, we received approximately 9,512 challenges, of which 1,782 were unique.”
  • “The candidates’ results are now being sent to the universities. Candidates are advised to contact their respective universities and institutions for further details,” it added.
  • Delhi University officials had previously announced their intention to start first-year classes by August 16. Registrar Vikas Gupta mentioned, “We anticipate that the results will be released by the NTA tentatively by Wednesday. Following that, we will begin the admission process, allowing students to select their course preferences.”
