Iran cautions the United States against launching a ground invasion

  • Iranian forces said they were “waiting for the arrival of American troops on the ground” and were ready to attack them and punish their regional partners permanently. This was reported by Iranian state media, quoting Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who also warned the United States not to start a ground invasion.
  • These statements came at a time when Pakistan announced that it would soon host talks between the United States and Iran.
  • Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in a televised speech that Pakistan was happy that both Iran and the United States trusted its role in helping with the talks, which are expected to happen in the next few days.
  • There was no immediate reply or confirmation from either the United States or Iran about these talks.
  • On Sunday, foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt were present in Islamabad for discussions to end the ongoing war that has lasted for a month. However, the United States and Israel were not part of these talks.
  • The Iranian Parliament Speaker rejected these diplomatic efforts, calling them a cover while the United States continues to send more troops to West Asia.
  • Ishaq Dar said that the visiting ministers supported Pakistan’s peace efforts but did not clearly say whether the talks between the U.S. and Iran would be direct or indirect.
  • The foreign ministers are expected to meet again on Monday to continue discussions.
  • Meanwhile, Iran slightly eased restrictions on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and agreed on Saturday to allow 20 more Pakistani ships to pass through this important route.
  • Pakistani officials said that only a limited number of ships have been allowed so far, as Iran wants to keep pressure on the strait without completely closing it.
  • Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who attended the talks along with Turkiye’s Hakan Fidan, Saudi Arabia’s Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar, said that the goal of the talks was to start direct communication between the United States and Iran.
  • He added that during the conflict, most communication between the two countries has happened through middlemen, not directly.
  • Despite these efforts, there was very little progress, as Israel and the United States continued attacking Iran, and Iran responded with missiles and drones across the region.
  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that Israeli universities and branches of U.S. universities in the region could be targeted if there are no guarantees for the safety of Iranian universities.
  • This warning came after Israeli strikes hit several universities, which Iran claims were involved in nuclear research.
  • Israel reported multiple waves of Iranian attacks on Sunday, and explosions were heard across Tehran.
  • The IRGC also said it carried out missile and drone attacks on aluminum plants in Bahrain and the UAE, claiming these industries are linked to the U.S. military.
  • According to Iranian authorities, more than 1,900 people have died in Iran due to the conflict.
  • In Israel, 19 people have been reported dead so far.

PM calls West Asia crisis a challenging period

  • Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the situation in West Asia is creating “challenging times” and asked people not to politicise the issue. He also warned citizens not to believe rumours related to the crisis.
  • During his monthly Mann Ki Baat address, he said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, people expected the world to move forward, but instead, conflicts and wars have continued to appear in different regions.
  • He pointed out that a serious war has been going on for a month in India’s neighbouring region, and millions of Indians have family members living there, especially in Gulf countries.
  • He expressed deep thanks to Gulf nations for supporting more than one crore Indians living there.
  • He also said that West Asia is very important for India’s energy needs, and because of the war, a global petrol and diesel crisis may arise.
  • Calling this a “challenging time,” he asked people to stay united and handle the situation together. He also said that those doing politics over this issue should stop, as it concerns the entire country.
  • He warned that people spreading rumours are harming the nation, and advised everyone to trust only official information and stay alert.
  • He also talked about the Gyan Bharatam Survey, which collects information about old manuscripts across India, and encouraged people to share details through the app.
  • He mentioned that thousands of manuscripts have already been submitted and are being verified.
  • Another initiative he spoke about was MY Bharat Budget Quest, which connects young people with the Budget process, and said that around 12 lakh youth have already participated.
  • He also talked about India’s recent success in sports, remembering the happiness after India won the T20 World Cup.
  • He mentioned a match in Hubli, Karnataka, where the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team won the Ranji Trophy, saying it will inspire young players.
  • He added that Jammu and Kashmir is becoming an important place for sports events and hoped that its athletes continue to succeed.

MGNREGS Workers Denied Employment Despite Assurances from the Centre

  • For the last 87 days, MGNREGS workers have been protesting in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, raising their concerns.
  • The Union government had promised that MGNREGS would continue as usual until the new law (VB-G RAM G Act, 2025) is fully implemented.
  • However, workers say that the reality on the ground is very different from these promises.
  • The protest started on January 2, and around 12,000 workers in the district have not received any work for 3–4 months, even before the new law came into effect.
  • There is still no clear information about when the new scheme will start, as the Centre is still discussing it with State governments.
  • Sanjay Sahni from MGNREGA Watch-Bihar said that work usually stops during the rainy season, so workers waited for the monsoon to end.
  • He explained that work normally starts again by December, but despite repeated requests, no work has been given, which he called a violation of the law.
  • Because of this, around 16,000 workers, mostly women, gathered to demand employment.
  • Some workers also went to Delhi on March 25 to meet officials from the Rural Development Ministry.
  • Sahni said that local officials claim they were told not to start new work, but the Ministry denies giving such orders.
  • He questioned whether this confusion is due to miscommunication or an unofficial instruction from the Centre.
  • Similar complaints have also come from Dungarpur district in Rajasthan, showing that this is not just a Bihar issue.
  • In Balwarha panchayat, about 40 women came to apply for April work, but officials asked them to return later due to lack of clarity.
  • Later, they were told that MGNREGS had been stopped and no more work would be given.
  • In Padarmarhi Mewarha panchayat, around 30 women waited for four hours asking for work.
  • At first, officials said no new work could be started, but after the women refused to leave, their applications were accepted, though it is still unclear if they will get work.
  • Madhulika from the Rajasthan Asangathit Mazdoor Union said that each family earns around ₹25,000–₹28,000 per year from MGNREGA work.
  • She explained that for many women-led families, this income and government pensions are the only source of money.
  • She also said that there is no official order stopping the scheme, and the new law clearly states that MGNREGA will continue until the new system starts.
  • Despite this, workers are being told that the scheme has been stopped, creating confusion and fear about their future.
