PM Modi pledges speedy approvals as India aims for $1-trillion semiconductor share
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will soon grab a big share of the $1 trillion world semiconductor market, promising that permissions for setting up factories will now be given much faster.
- He confirmed that the next stage of the India Semiconductor Mission is already in progress while speaking at Semicon India 2025, the yearly chip-making conference.
- Modi pointed out that India’s GDP grew by 7.8%, even though many countries today are working only for their own interests. He said this strong growth is spread across many different sectors, not just a few industries.
- In 2025 alone, five new semiconductor projects got clearance, taking the total to 10 projects. All these projects together are drawing investments worth $18 billion (around ₹1.5 lakh crore).
- According to him, these approvals show that the world now trusts India’s abilities and sees the country playing a bigger role in global semiconductor production and technology.
- The Prime Minister called semiconductor chips the “digital diamonds” of today, comparing them to crude oil, which powered growth in the last century. He noted that semiconductor chips will be the key drivers of economic growth in this century.
- He stressed the need to cut down on unnecessary paperwork and reduce the time it takes to go from “file to factory”. Faster production of wafers, he said, will be made possible with India’s National Single Window clearance system.
- Modi said this is the time for “execution with precision” and large-scale delivery, not temporary fixes. He underlined that India’s policies are designed with a long-term vision, not just short-term goals.
- He promised complete government support for the semiconductor industry and said he is confident that chips designed and made in India will soon be trusted across the world.
- Speaking at a time when global trade is facing challenges and the U.S. has put new tariffs, Modi praised India’s strength and resilience. He said while many countries are only looking after themselves, India continues to grow and stay steady.
Indian, Thai Soldiers Start Joint Exercise in Meghalaya
- The 14th edition of the India–Thailand military exercise MAITREE-XIV began on Monday with an inaugural ceremony at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
- The exercise, scheduled from September 1 to 14, aims to strengthen coordination and mutual understanding between the two armies as part of their ongoing exchange programme.
- The last MAITREE drill was conducted at Fort Vachiraprakarn in Thailand’s Tak Province, since both countries take turns hosting it each year.
- For this edition, the Indian Army has deployed 120 troops from a Madras Regiment battalion, who will train alongside 53 soldiers from the Royal Thai Army.
- The training this year is centred on company-level counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain, being conducted under the provisions of Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
Death Toll Tops 1,400 as Another Earthquake Strikes Fragile Afghanistan
- A new 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, shaking the same region still suffering from a bigger quake that had already killed more than 1,400 people.
- The latest tremor’s centre was close to the area where a 6.0-magnitude quake struck on Sunday night, destroying mountain villages near the Pakistan border.
- Disaster management spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan said the shocks were felt in Kunar province, the worst-affected area, but confirmed there were no new deaths this time.
- Sunday’s quake had left 1,411 people dead and 3,124 injured in Kunar province, while the nearby Nangarhar province reported another dozen deaths and hundreds more injured.
- Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world and has very little disaster response capacity, especially since foreign aid reduced after the Taliban took over in 2021.
- UN humanitarian coordinator Indrika Ratwatte cautioned that the disaster could impact hundreds of thousands of people. At the same time, rescue teams kept working day and night in Kunar’s villages that had been destroyed by the quake.
- Government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said over 5,400 houses had been destroyed in Kunar. Many badly affected places cannot even be reached by road, making rescue work very difficult.
- Relief camps are being arranged, and many countries have offered support. The European Union has already sent 130 tonnes of aid materials and pledged €1 million in assistance.
- A survivor named Obaidullah Stoman, 26, who was searching for his missing friend in Wadir village, said the destruction was so great that “only rubble is left where homes once stood.”
- The dead, including children, were wrapped in white cloths, prayed over by villagers, and buried in mass graves as families mourned their huge losses.
- The USGS (United States Geological Survey) said Tuesday’s quake’s centre was 27 km from Jalalabad at a shallow depth of 8 km, which made the destruction worse, especially since most homes were made of mud bricks.
- Whole villages crumbled, trapping people under debris and thick dust.
- Many of those hit by the quake were returnees forced out of Iran and Pakistan, most of them coming back through Nangarhar’s Torkham border.
- Rahmatullah Khaksar, head of Jalalabad hospital’s emergency ward, confirmed that since Sunday night, they had received 600 injured patients, stretching the hospital’s already weak facilities.
