Hathras stampede death toll rises to 121; organizer blames ‘anti-social elements’

  • As the death toll in the Hathras satsang stampede reaches 121, Sooraj Pal Singh, also known as Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari, the self-proclaimed godman leading the prayer meeting, claimed that “anti-social elements” caused a disruption after he departed from the event.
  • “I offer my sincere condolences to the families of those who have passed away and pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” Mr. Pal Singh said, stating that he intends to pursue legal action against the “anti-social elements.”
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site on Wednesday and ordered a judicial investigation into the incident. He did not dismiss the possibility of a “conspiracy” behind the stampede and assured that those responsible will be punished.
  • “A retired High Court judge will lead a judicial inquiry into the incident,” Mr. Adityanath said after meeting with the injured and the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister questioned whether the stampede was truly an accident, asking, “If not, whose conspiracy is this?”
  • The police have filed an FIR against a close associate of Mr. Pal Singh, though the godman himself has not been named as an accused. According to the FIR, followers of the preacher allegedly disposed of slippers and other items belonging to the victims in nearby farmlands to eliminate evidence.
  • Regarding why Mr. Pal Singh, also referred to as Bhole Baba, was not directly implicated by the police, Mr. Adityanath explained that the initial case was filed against those who had obtained permission for the event. He stressed that all individuals found guilty would be punished.
  • Regarding the Opposition’s claims about the deterioration of law and order in the State and accusations that the government is concealing the death toll, Mr. Adityanath responded, “Some individuals tend to politicize such tragic incidents. It is well-known whom that person associates with and their political affiliations. I believe it is important to investigate thoroughly.”
  • Several BJP associates have circulated photographs showing Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav participating in previous meetings of the godman.

Three new criminal laws named exclusively in English, without Hindi translations.

  • The three new criminal laws, which replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act on July 1, have been named exclusively in English. Additional Solicitor-General (ASG) AR. L. Sundaresan argued before the Madras High Court on Wednesday that the nomenclature was based on the English alphabet, omitting Hindi or Sanskrit translations.
  • Before Acting Chief Justice R. Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaq, ASG AR. L. Sundaresan denied B. Ramkumar Adityan’s allegation that the names Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam violate Article 348, which stipulates that all laws must have authoritative texts in English.
  • ASG Sundaresan argued that the use of the English alphabet in naming these laws does not infringe on anyone’s fundamental rights and emphasized that over time, people will become accustomed to these names.
  • He further argued that the names reflect the decision of Parliament, where elected representatives have chosen these names. Therefore, the names given by lawmakers, who represent the people’s will, should not be subject to questioning. He noted that while around 70% of the population may approve of the names, 30% may not, yet these names embody Parliament’s decision.
  • He acknowledged that any citizen could file a case questioning the naming if it violated any provision of the Constitution. However, he emphasized that in this case, there was no violation of the Constitution. He clarified, “The names are given only in English, not in Sanskrit or Hindi.” We have utilized some of the 26 letters in the English alphabet.
  • The judges requested the ASG to submit a written response to the PIL petition, which had advocated for renaming the three laws in English, and postponed the hearing to July 23rd.

The family of Agniveer killed in a landmine blast will receive compensation amounting to ₹1.65 crore

  • The Army clarified late on Wednesday that the family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, who died in a landmine blast, will receive approximately ₹1.65 crore in compensation. The Army underscored that the payments due to fallen heroes are promptly disbursed to their next of kin, including those of Agniveer.
  • The Army clarified its position in response to a social media post by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who demanded an apology from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for allegedly misleading Parliament.
  • “The Indian Army responded to specific social media posts indicating concerns that compensation had not been provided to the next of kin of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, who died in the line of duty. The Army emphasized its tribute to Agniveer Ajay Kumar’s supreme sacrifice, noting that his last rites were conducted with full military honors,” the Army stated in a post on X.
  • The 23-year-old lost his life on January 18 in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Army stated that out of the total due amount, ₹98.39 lakh has already been disbursed to the family of Agniveer Ajay. Additional ex gratia and other benefits totaling approximately ₹67 lakh, as per the provisions of the Agniveer scheme, will be settled finally and paid shortly after police verification. The total sum will approximate ₹1.65 crore.
  • Breaking down the ₹1.65-crore compensation, defense officials explained that it comprises ₹48 lakh as government insurance, ₹50 lakh from financial institutions under a memorandum of understanding for insurance, and an additional sum of ₹39,000. All these amounts have been disbursed to the family of Agniveer Ajay Singh.
  • Additionally, officials stated that an ex gratia payment of ₹44 lakh, ₹8 lakh from the Army welfare fund, approximately ₹13 lakh as the remaining balance of pay until the completion of his tenure, and a Seva Nidhi fund amounting to ₹2.3 lakh, totaling ₹67.3 lakh, would be disbursed following due process.
