Trump praises rescue as Iran claims U.S. aircraft losses

  • A U.S. Air Force officer who was flying an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet and was shot down in Iran on Friday was rescued by U.S. Special Operations forces on Saturday night. On Sunday, Donald Trump called it “one of the most daring search and rescue operations in U.S. history.”
  • However, Iran’s military gave a completely different version, calling the U.S. mission “a complete failure.” They claimed they destroyed two transport planes, two helicopters, and two drones used in the rescue.
  • In a social media post, Trump said the rescued officer had been trapped behind enemy lines in dangerous mountains, while enemies were actively searching for him and getting closer.
  • He also said that, under his orders, the U.S. military sent many heavily armed aircraft with powerful weapons to rescue the officer.
  • Trump claimed that no American soldiers were killed or injured during the mission and said the S. had full control of the airspace over Iran.
  • Later, he mentioned that the rescued officer was “seriously wounded.”
  • In another post, Trump used strong language and warned that the U.S. could attack Iran’s important infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.
  • An Iranian military spokesperson from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said their forces had destroyed two U.S. MC-130 aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the mission.
  • Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf shared a photo online, claiming it showed burnt remains of U.S. aircraft, and said sarcastically that if the U.S. had three more such “victories,” it would be destroyed.
  • The F-15E jet, which had two officers onboard, is said to be the first U.S. aircraft shot down by Iran since the U.S. and Israel started their war against Iran on February 28, according to U.S. officials.
  • The crew had ejected (jumped out safely) after the jet came under attack over southern Iran on Friday.
  • One crew member was rescued earlier in a separate mission.
  • An A-10 Warthog aircraft was also hit over the Persian Gulf, and its pilot ejected before the plane crashed.
  • A U.S. Black Hawk helicopter (UH-60) used in the first rescue mission was hit by Iranian fire, but it managed to land safely in Iraq, according to U.S. media.
  • The second officer remained stuck in mountainous terrain for more than 36 hours before being rescued.
  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said they had destroyed enemy flying objects and that the U.S. had once again faced a humiliating defeat.
  • Iran also claimed that it shot down two U.S. drones on Sunday — an MQ-9 Reaper and an Elbit Hermes-900 — over Isfahan.
  • Col. Ebrahim Zolfaqari said the U.S. rescue mission was actually an emergency evacuation attempt, and claimed it was completely stopped by Iranian forces.
  • Meanwhile, U.S. media reports said that the U.S. military itself destroyed two MC-130J transport aircraft after they got stuck at a remote base inside Iran.
  • The MC-130J aircraft is specially designed with advanced technology to send troops into dangerous areas and safely bring them back.
  • Earlier, while announcing the rescue, Trump wrote “WE GOT HIM!”, saying the operation successfully saved a highly respected Colonel who is now safe.
  • He stressed that the officer was in serious danger, with Iranian forces searching heavily in the area, making the mission extremely risky.
  • Trump also said that such rescue missions are rare because of the high danger to both soldiers and equipment.
  • He added that this was the second rescue mission, following an earlier one where another pilot was rescued in broad daylight, which is unusual, and that operation lasted seven hours over Iranian territory.

Swim or Sink: Reptile Patrols Expected Along Bangladesh Border

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) has asked its field units to study whether reptiles like snakes and crocodiles can be used in river areas along the Bangladesh border to stop illegal entry and crime.
  • An internal message sent on March 26 from BSF headquarters said that this idea is based on instructions from Home Minister Amit Shah.
  • The message told officers to study the possibility of using reptiles in weak river areas and check if it can work practically.
  • A copy of this message has been seen by The Hindu newspaper.
  • So far, BSF has not officially commented on this plan.
  • A BSF officer clarified that this is only an idea under study, and no action has been taken yet.
  • The officer also pointed out major problems, such as:
  • Where the reptiles will come from
  • How they will affect local people living nearby
  • This idea came after a meeting held on February 9 in Delhi.
  • The BSF is responsible for guarding India’s borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan.
  • Many parts of the India-Bangladesh border are flood-prone, and it is very difficult to build fences there.
  • Because many people live close to the border, using reptiles could be dangerous for villagers, especially during floods.
  • A March 17 report by a Parliamentary Committee said:
  • Total border length: 4,096.7 km
  • Approved fencing: 3,326.14 km
  • Completed fencing: 2,954.56 km
  • Remaining unfenced: about 371 km
  • The Home Ministry’s 2024–25 report says the border passes through difficult areas like hills, rivers, and valleys.
  • To stop illegal migration and crimes, the government plans to build fencing with lights in phases.
  • Where fencing is not possible, technology-based solutions will be used.
  • However, work has slowed down due to:
  • River and low-lying land
  • Houses close to the border
  • Land disputes
  • Protests by local people
  • The March 26 message also asked officials to identify border posts where there is no mobile network.
  • The Eastern Command has been told to map such areas and give details for further action.

Water sharing and visa issues likely to feature on Bangladesh Minister’s agenda

  • Important topics like sharing river water, energy cooperation, visa services, and the West Asia war are expected to be discussed during the visit of Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to India this week.
  • This will be the first visit by a Bangladeshi Foreign Minister after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, 2024, which had caused relations between the two countries to weaken.
  • Officials in Bangladesh held preparation meetings on Sunday, and the visit is expected on April 7 and 8.
  • Indian officials have stressed the need to speed up talks to renew the Ganga water treaty of 1996, as there was little progress in the last 15 months under the earlier interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
  • The new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who took office on February 17, has shown interest in completing the agreement before December 2026, when the treaty expires.
  • Bangladesh’s Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Choudhury Anee said on April 1 that the technical team has already started work in Dhaka.
  • Bangladesh officials also said that if needed, they may go for a temporary extension of the treaty before making a long-term agreement.
  • Both India and Bangladesh are being careful in discussions because of the upcoming West Bengal elections, where the water-sharing issue could become politically sensitive.
  • Rahman’s visit also shows that India is ready to work with the new Bangladesh government.
  • Rahman, who earlier worked as National Security Adviser under Muhammad Yunus, is one of the few leaders who continued into the new government formed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
  • Because the situation is sensitive, India has not officially announced the visit, while Bangladesh has described it as a “transit visit” before Rahman travels to Mauritius for the Indian Ocean Conference.
  • This conference is being organised by the India Foundation, along with India’s External Affairs Ministry and the Mauritius government.
  • During his stay in Delhi, Rahman is expected to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with senior officials, editors, and diplomats.
  • The West Asia war and rising energy problems are expected to be major discussion points, especially for Bangladesh.
  • Bangladesh has also said that restoring normal visa services for its tourists and business people is a top priority.
