Supreme Court rejects Bengal’s request to halt voter roll freeze

  • The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused the request made by the West Bengal government to delay freezing the voter list. The State had argued that more than 20 lakh voters who failed verification during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) should be given extra time to get their voting rights back for the Assembly elections scheduled on April 23 and April 29.
  • The Court also took serious note of the gherao (encirclement) of judicial officers in Malda district on April 1. Using its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution of India, the Court said the incident was not just an emotional reaction but a “well-planned, calculated and deeply instigated” act.
  • A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant ordered the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the Malda incident.
  • During the hearing, senior advocate Shyam Divan, representing West Bengal, said that many voters were left out of the list because of “logical discrepancies” found during verification.
  • He suggested that the 19 appellate tribunals should complete all appeals by April 15, so that a final updated voter list could be published on April 18, just five days before voting begins.
  • He also said that even voters whose appeals are not decided by April 15 should still be included, so that no one loses their right to vote.
  • Divan argued that freezing the voter list on April 6, which is also the last date for filing nominations, would leave lakhs of voters without voting rights and weaken the appeal system.
  • He added that appeals are a continuation of the legal process, and pointed out that these voters had already voted earlier, including in the 2002 elections.
  • However, Justice Joymalya Bagchi disagreed. He said that tribunal hearings cannot be rushed or forced into strict deadlines, as they must follow fair legal procedures (natural justice).
  • The Court noted that out of more than 60 lakh objections, around 15 lakh had already been resolved by judicial officers.
  • Senior advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu, appearing for the Election Commission of India, said that all verification work would be completed by April 6 night, after which a supplementary voter list would be released.
  • He explained that judicial officers had worked very hard to handle nearly 60 lakh objections, and now it was necessary to fix a final list.
  • He also said that people who are not satisfied can still file appeals, but these cases may take one to two months to be decided.
  • Justice Bagchi questioned how tribunals could work properly under pressure, showing concern that fairness should not be compromised just to meet deadlines.
  • In another related issue, the Court criticized the West Bengal Chief Secretary for not responding to calls from the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on April 1.
  • Later, the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police appeared online and apologized.
  • Justice Bagchi strongly said that senior officers must remain reachable, and should “lower themselves” so that even top judges can contact them.
  • Chief Justice Surya Kant added that such stubborn behavior of officers happens because they are “pampered”, clearly showing the Court’s disapproval.

Iran Intelligence Chief Killed Amid Looming Trump Deadline

  • Majid Khademi, the intelligence chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran on Monday, according to Iranian media and Israel’s Defence Minister.
  • He had earlier been sanctioned by the United States for his alleged role in cracking down on protests.
  • Israel also claimed that it killed Asghar Bakeri, who was leading a secret unit of the IRGC’s Quds Force.
  • Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said that Iran’s steel and petrochemical industries had been badly damaged.
  • According to the IRGC, Khademi was killed in an early morning airstrike.
  • The IRGC praised him for strengthening Iran’s defense and said it would take revenge.
  • In a statement, IRGC warned that a major retaliatory attack called “crushing revenge” is being prepared.
  • At the same time, a deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was approaching.
  • Because of this, the U.S. and Israel carried out a series of attacks on Monday, which killed more than 25 people in Iran.
  • In response, Iran launched missile attacks targeting Israel and nearby Arab countries.

“New Bangladesh–India Relations Will Steer Clear of Past Mistakes”

  • Bangladesh has said it wants to build a new kind of relationship with India, focusing mainly on connections between people rather than political leaders or parties.
  • This statement came from Humayun Kobir, Foreign Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
  • Kobir said this new relationship will avoid mistakes made in the past and will focus on what both countries’ people actually want.
  • He spoke after India’s High Commissioner Pranay Verma met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
  • Kobir said that talks also covered energy cooperation, especially through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline.
  • India has already supplied 5,000 tonnes of diesel on March 10, and both countries are continuing discussions to solve Bangladesh’s energy shortage problem.
  • This shortage is happening at a time when the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran is affecting the region.
  • Kobir is expected to travel with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to India starting Tuesday.
  • This will be the first high-level visit since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, 2024, after a student-led public movement.
  • Kobir clearly said that Bangladesh has moved on from Sheikh Hasina’s time, and that a “Hasina-India” relationship is no longer possible.
  • He even described Sheikh Hasina as a “spent force” with no influence left.
  • He stressed that both countries must create a new space for cooperation.
  • Kobir also suggested that political leaders and officials from both sides should meet more often, so that problems can be solved and misunderstandings can be avoided.
  • Officials said that Khalilur Rahman’s visit will go ahead as planned, but details are being kept secret because the situation is sensitive.
  • Relations between the two countries have not fully improved yet, especially due to tensions during the interim government period.
  • This includes issues like Sheikh Hasina staying in India and attacks on Indian offices and visa centres in Bangladesh.
  • According to Bangladesh’s newspaper Prothom Alo, the country will raise important issues during talks, including:
  • Renewal of the Ganga water-sharing treaty
  • More energy cooperation
  • Removal of restrictions placed by India (April–June 2025) on trade routes
  • Bangladesh is also likely to ask India to reduce border firing incidents, which affect civilians.
  • India says such firing is against criminals and smugglers, but Bangladesh argues that such people should be arrested and tried in court instead of being shot.
