‘Vocabulary’
- Corpulent (adj.)
Meaning: having an excess of body fat (हृष्ट-पुष्ट)
Synonyms: plump, fat, round
Antonyms: slender, thin, skinny
Sentence: He was fifty or thereabouts and was corpulent and tall in person.
- Bereft (adj.)
Meaning: suffering the death of a loved one (वंचित)
Synonyms: bereaved, grieving, weeping
Sentence: Alone now and almost penniless, he was bereft of hope.
- Incisive (adj.)
Meaning: very clear and direct (स्पष्ट)
Synonyms: concise, poignant, satirical
Sentence: The error was obvious to an incisive mind like his.
- Stale (adj.)
Meaning: used or heard so often as to be dull (बासी)
Synonyms: cliché, stereotyped, tired
Antonyms: fresh, new, original
Sentence: The bread/biscuits/cake had gone stale.
- Permeate (verb)
Meaning: to spread throughout (घुसना)
Synonyms: soak, fill (up), penetrate
Sentence: Water will easily permeate through the sand.
- Cleave (verb)
Meaning: to hold to something firmly as if by adhesion (कायम रहना)
Synonyms: glue, stick, adhere
Antonyms: fall, loosen, drop
Sentence: You should resolutely cleave to the facts in your report.
- Oblivious (adj.)
Meaning: not informed about or aware of something (बेख़बर)
Synonyms: unaware, ignorant, unmindful
Antonyms: aware, conscious, cognizant
Sentence: She lay motionless where she was, oblivious to pain.
- Felony (noun)
Meaning: a serious criminal act (घोर अपराध)
Synonyms: crime, trespass, violation
Antonyms: innocence, impeccability, virtue
Sentence: Under state law, killing someone is considered a felony.
- Inept (adj.)
Meaning: lacking qualities (as knowledge, skill, or ability) required to do a job (अयोग्य)
Synonyms: unfitted, incapable, unable
Antonyms: competent, capable, skilled
Sentence: A well-meaning but inept assistant who can’t seem to keep appointments straight.
- Appall (verb)
Meaning: to cause an unpleasant surprise for (भयभीत करना)
Synonyms: terrify, floor, frighten
Antonyms: delight, please, rejoice
Sentence: Conditions inside the house overrun with cats simply appalled animal control officers.
