 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Lackey (noun)

Meaning: a person hired to perform household or personal services. (नौकर)

Synonyms: servant, flunkey, steward

Antonyms: master, boss, leader

Sentence: We sent the lackey out to get doughnuts for the office.

  1. Observance (noun)

Meaning: the following of a custom, rule, or law. (पालन)

Synonyms: adherence, compliance, observation

Antonyms: violation, breach, infringement

Sentence: The observance of this family tradition would make your grandmother very happy.

  1. Larceny (noun)

Meaning: the unlawful taking and carrying away of property without the consent of its owner. (चोरी)

Synonyms: robbery, stealing, theft

Sentence: Dukes Bpleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny last month.

  1. Chicanery (noun)

Meaning: the use of clever underhanded actions to achieve an end. (चालाकी)

Synonyms: deception, treachery, skullduggery

Antonyms: sincerity, artlessness, forthrightness

Sentence: The investigation revealed political chicanery and corruption at the highest levels.

  1. Lachrymose (adj.)

Meaning: given to expressing strong emotion (as sorrow) by readily shedding tears. (रोना)

Synonyms: tearful, weeping, crying

Antonyms: smiling, laughing, grinning

Sentence: He is better known for his lachrymose ballads than hard rock numbers.

  1. Laconic (adj.)

Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning. (संक्षिप्त)

Synonyms: concise, brief, summary

Antonyms: prolix, verbose, wordy

Sentence: The sportscasters colour commentary tends to be laconic but very much to the point.

  1. Shrilled (verb)

Meaning: to cry out loudly and emotionally. (चिल्लाना)

Synonyms: screamed, squealed, yelled

Antonyms: whispered, muttered, murmured

Sentence: ‘I hate you!’ she shrilled.

  1. Witticism (noun)

Meaning: something said or done to cause laughter

Synonyms: joke, laugh, joking

Sentence: He is a drama critic who is best remembered for his biting witticisms.

  1. Vulnerable (adj.)

Meaning: being in a situation where one is likely to meet with harm. (असुरक्षित)

Synonyms: susceptible, sensitive, exposed

Antonyms: invulnerable, unexposed, protected

Sentence: You must try not to appear vulnerable.

  1. Averting (verb)

Meaning: to keep from happening by taking action in advance. (टालना)

Synonyms: preventing, forestalling, avoiding

Antonyms: assisting, aiding, facilitating

Sentence: Pre-emption was the only method of averting defeat.
