 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Gluttonous (adj.)

Meaning: Having a huge appetite. (पेटू)

Synonyms: greedy, ravenous, hungry

Antonyms: full, satisfied, content

Sentence: He eats because he is gluttonous, not hungry.

  1. Matron (noun)

Meaning: A dignified usually elderly woman of some rank or authority. (बुढ़िया)

Synonyms: mother, grandam, mistress

Sentence: Frank looked up in surprise when Matron walked in.

  1. Apprise (verb)

Meaning: To give information to. (बताना)

Synonyms: inform, tell, advise

Antonyms: mislead, misinform

Sentence: The secretary came to apprise us that the erection of the monster machine had been successfully completed.

  1. Besmirch (verb)

Meaning: To make dirty. (गंदा करना)

Synonyms: stain, blacken, dirty

Antonyms: stain, blacken, dirty

Sentence: Inconsiderately besmirched the carpet with their dirty feet.

  1. Courteous (adj.)

Meaning: Showing consideration, courtesy, and good manners. (विनम्र)

Synonyms: polite, gracious, civil

Antonyms: discourteous, rude, thoughtless

Sentence: She was unfailingly courteous and helpful.

  1. Forsake (verb)

Meaning: To cause to remain behind. (छोड़ देना)

Synonyms: leave, abandon, desert

Antonyms: have, possess, keep

Sentence: Rats leave (or desert or forsake) a sinking ship.

  1. Flabbergasted (adj.)

Meaning: Affected with sudden and great wonder or surprise. (चकित)

Synonyms: amazed, stunned, shocked

Antonyms: nonchalant, unruffled, casual

Sentence: He was flabbergasted when we told him how cheap it was.

  1. Dopey (adj.)

Meaning: Suffering from mental confusion. (सुस्ती)

Synonyms: dazed, stunned, distracted

Antonyms: conscious, alert, clearheaded

Sentence: The medicine always made him feel dopey and unable to concentrate.

  1. Tyrant (noun)

Meaning: A person who uses power or authority in a cruel, unjust, or harmful way. (तानाशाह)

Synonyms: dictator, ruler, monarch

Sentence: The people universally feared the tyrant, who was notorious for his frequent use of torture.

  1. Invective (noun)

Meaning: Harsh insulting language. (अपशब्द)

Synonyms: abuse, vituperation, insult

Antonyms: praise, applause, acclaim

Sentence: A woman had hurled racist invective at the family.
