In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.
‘Vocabulary’
- Sapping (verb)
Meaning: gradually weaken or destroy (a person’s strength or power). (निर्बल बनाना)
Synonyms: draining, weakening, debilitating
Antonyms: reviving, rejuvenating, stimulating
Sentence: Our energy is being sapped by bureaucrats and politicians.
- Thy (article)
Meaning: archaic or dialect form of your. (तेरा)
Synonyms: thine, thee, yours
Sentence: Hide nothing from thy physician.
- Eke (verb)
Meaning: manage to support oneself or make a living with difficulty. (बड़ी मुश्किल से पाना)
Synonyms: earn, obtain, scrounge
Sentence: They had to eke out a living on a tiny income.
- Gingerly (adv.)
Meaning: in a careful or cautious manner. (सावधानी से)
Synonyms: cautiously, carefully, circumspectly
Antonyms: careless, heedless, unmindful
Sentence: He opened the box gingerly and looked inside.
- Sham (noun)
Meaning: a thing that is not what it is purported to be. (दिखावा)
Synonyms: pretense, fake, act
Antonyms: real, genuine, authentic
Sentence: The latest crime figures are a complete sham.
- Impresario (noun)
Meaning: a person who organizes and often finances concerts, plays, or operas. (आयोजक)
Synonyms: organizer, manager, producer
Sentence: It was the actor’s dream to work under the renowned impresario.
- Con (verb)
Meaning: persuade (someone) to do or believe something, typically by use of a deception. (ठगना)
Synonyms: swindle, defraud, cheat
Antonyms: undeceive, disclose
Sentence: Tried to con me into thinking that he had won the lottery.
- Incommodious (adj.)
Meaning: causing inconvenience or discomfort. (असुविधाजनक)
Synonyms: limited, restricted
Antonyms: commodious, capacious
Sentence: The harbour is unsafe and incommodious.
- Gazillion (noun)
Meaning: a very large number or quantity (used for emphasis). (अधिक)
Synonyms: million, thousands, excess
Antonyms: little, inadequacy, deficiency
Sentence: I have a gazillion things to do.
- Victual (noun)
Meaning: food or provisions. (अन्न)
Synonyms: food, meal, viand
Sentence: “I can’t bear to see good victuals wasted, ” said Martha.
