 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Agape (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing signs of eagerly awaiting something (इंतजार)

Synonyms: restless, eager, restive

Antonyms: unworried, restful, relaxed

Sentence: At the sound of the sleigh bells the children were all agape, waiting for Santa to appear

  1. Parable (noun)

Meaning: a story intended to teach a basic truth or moral about life (नीतिकथा)

Synonyms: allegory, fable, tale

Sentence: The parable in which the repentant sinner is compared to the returning prodigal son who is welcomed home

  1. Ravage (verb)

Meaning: to bring destruction to (something) through violent action (नाश करना)

Synonyms: destroy, devastate, ruin

Antonyms: fix, repair, redeem

Sentence: The forest was ravaged by fire.

  1. Blight (noun)

Meaning: something that spoils the appearance or completeness of a thing (नुक़सान)

Synonyms: distortion, damage, defect

Antonyms: patch, ameliorate, remedy

Sentence: The company had to suffer huge blight

  1. Benefactor (noun)

Meaning: One that helps another with gifts or money (दान देनेवाला)

Synonyms: donor, donator, patron

Antonyms: taker, receiver, self-seeker

Sentence: An anonymous benefactor gave the school a dozen new computers

  1. Humongous (adj.)

Meaning: unusually large (विशालकाय)

Synonyms: huge, giant, massive

Antonyms: small, tiny, mini

Sentence: They have a humongous dog.

  1. Agitators (noun)

Meaning: having or being an outward sign of good feelings (आंदोलनकारियों)

Synonyms: rebels, demonstrators, insurgents

Antonyms: peacemakers, reconcilers, uniters

Sentence: A political agitator who led an unsuccessful revolt against the government

  1. Whimsy (noun)

Meaning: A person who stirs up public feelings especially of discontent (सनक)

Synonyms: whimsicality, freak, humor

Antonyms: normality, constant, simplicity

Sentence: The pop singer’s latest whimsy is that she has acting talent

  1. Foray (noun)

Meaning: a sudden attack on and entrance into hostile territory (धावा)

Synonyms: inroad, descent, irruption

Sentence: Made a nighttime foray into the enemy camp and took their command post

  1. Buttress (noun)

Meaning: something or someone to which one looks for support (समर्थन देना)

Synonyms: pillar, backbone, dependence

Antonyms: disapproval, discouragement, opposition

Sentence: He was a buttress against extremism in the party.
