‘Vocabulary’
- Apocryphal (adj.)
Meaning: (of a story or statement) of doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as being true. (शंकायुक्त)
Synonyms: fictitious, made-up, untrue
Antonyms: real, factual, literal
Sentence: Most of the stories about him are apocryphal.
- Centrist (adj.)
Meaning: having moderate political views or policies. (मध्यमार्गी)
Synonyms: conventional, neutral
Antonyms: extremist, radical, revolutionary
Sentence: Several centrist candidates were elected, apparently in a reaction against the extremists.
- Miserliness (noun)
Meaning: excessive desire to save money; extreme meanness. (कंजूसी)
Synonyms: avarice, acquisitiveness, parsimony
Antonyms: bounty, generosity, largesse
Sentence: The party earned a damaging reputation for miserliness by cutting pensions.
- Anecdote (noun)
Meaning: a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. (उपाख्यान)
Synonyms: story, tale, narrative
Sentence: This research is based on anecdote not fact.
- Digressions (noun)
Meaning: a temporary departure from the main subject in speech or writing. (विषयांतर)
Synonyms: deviation, detour, diversion
Sentence: After several digressions, he finally got to the point.
- Palliate (verb)
Meaning: to make more bearable or less severe (कम करना)
Synonyms: allay, alleviate, assuage
Antonyms: aggravate, exacerbate
Sentence: This medicine should palliate your cough at least a little.
- Hectored (verb)
Meaning: talk to (someone) in a bullying way. (बदमाशी से बात करना)
Synonyms: bully, intimidate, browbeat
Antonyms: comforted, consoled, soothed
Sentence: Brooks had hectored employees who refused to work overtime.
- Indelible (adj.)
Meaning: (of ink or a pen) making marks that cannot be removed. (अमिट)
Synonyms: ineradicable, inerasable, ineffaceable
Antonyms: eradicable, erasable
Sentence: The blood had left an indelible mark on her shirt.
- Milieu (noun)
Meaning: a person’s social environment. (प्रतिवेश)
Synonyms: environment, ambient, atmosphere
Sentence: Coming from another milieu, she found life as an actor’s wife very strange at first.
- Gleaned (verb)
Meaning: extract (information) from various sources. (से प्राप्त)
Synonyms: obtain, get, take
Sentence: What do you glean from the news?
