The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  13th May 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Efficacious (adj.)

Meaning: producing or capable of producing a desired result (प्रभावोत्पादक)

Synonyms: efficient, effective, potent

Antonyms: ineffective, useless, inefficient

Sentence: Example is always more efficacious than precept.

  1. Byzantine (adj.)

Meaning: having many parts or aspects that are usually interrelated (पेचीदा)

Synonyms: complicated, intricate, complicate

Antonyms: simple, plain, uncomplicated

Sentence: He spent his first year at the Pentagon just trying to fathom its byzantine workings.

  1. Kudos (noun)

Meaning: praise and honor received for an achievement. (प्रशंसा)

Synonyms: applause, accolade, praise

Antonyms: booing, smirk

Sentence: He received kudos from everyone on his performance.

  1. Deference (noun)

Meaning: humble submission and respect. (सम्मान)

Synonyms: obedience, acquiescence, submissiveness

Antonyms: defiance, disobedience, antipathy

Sentence: He addressed him with the deference due to age.

  1. Polemic (noun)

Meaning: a speech or piece of writing expressing a strongly critical attack on or controversial opinion about someone or something. (विवादात्मक)

Synonyms: hostile, bitter, controversial

Antonyms: praise, acclaim, applause

Sentence: He launched into a fierce polemic against the government’s policies.

  1. Supersede (verb)

Meaning: take the place of (a person or thing previously in authority or use) (स्थान लेना)

Synonyms: replace, supplant, substitute

Sentence: The theory has been superseded by more recent research.

  1. Hue and cry (noun)

Meaning: a loud clamor or public outcry. (हो-हल्ला)

Synonyms: noise, howl, outcry

Antonyms: silence, quiet

Sentence: A terrific hue and cry was raised against the new tax proposals.

  1. Brainiac (noun)

Meaning: a very smart person (तेज़ दिमाग वाला)

Synonyms: genius, intellect, nerd

Antonyms: idiot, moron, dunce

Sentence: The famous mathematician is a brainiac who would rather work on solving complex mathematical problems than sleep at night.

  1. Enticement (noun)

Meaning: something used to attract or to tempt someone (फुसलाना)

Synonyms: lure, temptation, attraction

Sentence: The hospital often offers T-shirts or caps as enticements for people to donate blood.

  1. Tout (verb)

Meaning: to praise or publicize lavishly and often excessively (प्रचारित करना)

Synonyms: advertise, announce, promote

Sentence: We should tout our wares on television.
