‘Vocabulary’
- Ayes and nays (adv.)
Meaning: as in yes or no (हां और ना)
Sentence: The ayes and nays of the final vote are not recorded.
- Sparse (adj.)
Meaning: thinly dispersed or scattered. (तितर-बितर)
Synonyms: scattered, thinly distributed, scarce
Sentence: Vegetation becomes sparse higher up the mountains.
- Intemperate (adj.)
Meaning: having or showing a lack of self-control; immoderate. (असंयमी)
Synonyms: uncontrolled, rampant, unbridled
Antonyms: temperate, sober, abstinent
Sentence: The judge’s intemperate outburst almost caused a retrial.
- Wherewithal (noun)
Meaning: the money or other means needed for a particular purpose. (साधन)
Synonyms: resources, assets, means
Sentence: He didn’t have the wherewithal to repay the loan.
- Bankrolled (verb)
Meaning: support (a person, organization, or project) financially. (आर्थिक रूप से समर्थन करना)
Synonyms: finance, pay for, funded
Antonyms: defunded
Sentence: Several corporations bankrolled the Broadway musical.
- Botch (verb)
Meaning: carry out (a task) badly or carelessly (ढिलाई से काम करना)
Synonyms: bungle, do badly, do clumsily
Antonyms: sort out, achieve, correct
Sentence: Don’t botch up my car this time.
- Virtuosity (noun)
Meaning: great skill in music or another artistic pursuit. (कलाप्रवीण)
Synonyms: mastery, expertise, proficiency
Antonyms: incompetency, unfamiliarity
Sentence: At that time, his virtuosity on the trumpet had no parallel in jazz.
- Stratification (noun)
Meaning: the arrangement or classification of something into different groups. (श्रेणीविभाजन)
Synonyms: categorization, categorizing, classifying
Sentence: She was concerned about the stratification of American society.
- Thaw (verb)
Meaning: (of ice, snow, or another frozen substance, such as food) become liquid or soft as a result of warming. (पिघलना)
Synonyms: liquefy, melt, fuse
Antonyms: harden, set, solidify
Sentence: The snow started to thaw as the temperature kept up.
- Contumacy (noun)
Meaning: stubborn refusal to obey or comply with authority, especially a court order or summons. (आज्ञा का उल्लंघन)
Synonyms: contrariness, defiance, disobedience
Antonyms: compliance, obedience, submission
Sentence: Most of unsuccessful men have the characteristics of contumacy and haughty.
