 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Felicitate (verb)

Meaning: to express to (someone) admiration for his or her success or good fortune (अभिनंदन करना)

Synonyms: compliment, congratulate, applaud

Antonyms: cry down, decry, deprecate

Sentence: The whole family felicitated John on his new appointment.

  1. Cordoned (verb)

Meaning: prevent access to or from an area or building by surrounding it with police or other guards. (घेराबंदी कर दी)

Synonyms: close off, seal off, tape off

Sentence: Police cordoned off part of the city centre.

  1. Laxity (noun)

Meaning: lack of strictness or care. (बेपरवाही)

Synonyms: carelessness, heedlessness, inadvertence

Antonyms: tightness, compliance, care

Sentence: The newspapers accused local police of laxity in dealing with gamblers.

  1. Provisos (noun)

Meaning: a condition attached to an agreement. (प्रावधानों)

Synonyms: condition, stipulation, provision

Sentence: He left his unborn grandchild a trust fund with the proviso that he be named after the old man.

  1. Dissent (noun)

Meaning: the expression or holding of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held. (मतभेद)

Synonyms: disagreement, lack of agreement, dispute

Antonyms: accord, agreement, concord

Sentence: In those days, religious dissent was not tolerated.

  1. Poise (noun)

Meaning: graceful and elegant bearing in a person. (संतुलन)

Synonyms: balance, equilibrium, control

Antonyms: disequilibrium, imbalance, volatility

Sentence: Louisa seems to have much more poise and confidence.

  1. Shrewdness (noun)

Meaning: the quality of having or showing good powers of judgement. (चतुराई)

Synonyms: sharpness, acuteness, acuity

Antonyms: guilelessness, ingenuousness, innocence

Sentence: The coach showed considerable tactical shrewdness.

  1. Profusion (noun)

Meaning: an abundance or large quantity of something. (प्रचुरता)

Synonyms: abundance, lot, mass

Antonyms: bit, deficit, lack

Sentence: Roses grew in profusion against the old wall.

  1. Propulsion (noun)

Meaning: the action of driving or pushing forward. (संचालक शक्ति)

Synonyms: drive, propel, push

Sentence: This aircraft works by jet propulsion.

  1. Follies (noun)

Meaning: lack of good sense; foolishness. (मूर्खता)

Synonyms: absurdities, asininities, foolishness

Antonyms: prudences, sagacities, wisdoms

Sentence: Learn wisdom by the follies of others.
