The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  17th September 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Acquisitive (adj.)

Meaning: having or marked by an eager and often selfish desire especially for material possessions (प्राप्त करने की लालसावाला)

Synonyms: greedy, mercenary, eager

Antonyms: generous, liberal, charitable

Sentence: We live in an acquisitive society.

  1. Gratuitous (adj.)

Meaning: not needed by the circumstances or to accomplish an end (अनावश्यक)

Synonyms: unnecessary, extra, needless

Antonyms: necessary, essential, required

Sentence: There’s too much crime and gratuitous violence on TV.

  1. Signet (noun)

Meaning: a small seal, especially one set in a ring, used instead of or with a signature to give authentication to an official document. (मुहर)

Sentence: Such letters are sealed with the cardinal’s own signet ring.

  1. Cachet (noun)

Meaning: a characteristic or quality that confers the favorable regard or respect of people (प्रतिष्ठा)

Synonyms: prestige, stature, position

Antonyms: shame, odium, pettiness

Sentence: No other brand name has quite the same cachet.

  1. Absolve (verb)

Meaning: set or declare (someone) free from blame, guilt, or responsibility. (विमुक्त करना)

Synonyms: acquit, exonerate, vindicate

Antonyms: incriminate, accuse, charge

Sentence: They agree to absolve us from our obligation.

  1. Inveigh (verb)

Meaning: to express dissatisfaction, pain, or resentment usually tiresomely (असंतोष प्रकट करना)

Synonyms: complain, whine

Antonyms: rejoice, delight, accept

Sentence: A lot of his writings inveigh against luxury and riches.

  1. Maladroit (adj.)

Meaning: lacking or showing a lack of nimbleness in using one’s hands (अयोग्य)

Synonyms: bungling, awkward, inept

Antonyms: dextrous, skilled

Sentence: The young man’s maladroit remarks about the hostess embarrassed everyone at the party.

  1. Rapport (noun)

Meaning: a friendly relationship marked by ready communication and mutual understanding (तालमेल)

Synonyms: friendship, solidarity, communion

Antonyms: alienation, disaffection, estrangement

Sentence: He had an excellent rapport with his patients.

  1. Haggard (adj.)

Meaning: looking exhausted and unwell, especially from fatigue, worry, or suffering. (थका हुआ)

Synonyms: tired, drained, unwell

Antonyms: healthy, fit

Sentence: He looked pale and haggard.

  1. Voracious (adj.)

Meaning: wanting or devouring great quantities of food. (पेटू)

Synonyms: insatiable, unquenchable, unappeasable

Antonyms: satisfied, full, glutted

Sentence: It seemed like the voracious kitten was eating her weight in food every day.
