The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  18th May 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Avouchment (noun)

Meaning: a solemn and often public declaration of the truth or existence of something (घोषणा)

Synonyms: declaration, assertion, claim

Antonyms: dispute, question

Sentence: Your avouchment of his good intentions means he won’t be disciplined.

  1. Evermore (adv.)

Meaning: (chiefly used for rhetorical effect or in ecclesiastical contexts) always. (हमेशा के लिये)

Synonyms: always, forever, eternally

Antonyms: never, nevermore, ne’er

Sentence: The editor’s decision is final and shall evermore remain so.

  1. Commonality (noun)

Meaning: a point which two or more things share in common (समानता)

Synonyms: similarity, resemblance, parallel

Antonyms: difference, dissimilarity, discrepancy

Sentence: We don’t have the same commonality of interest.

  1. Smear (verb)

Meaning: damage the reputation of (someone) by false accusations; slander. (बदनाम करना)

Synonyms: libel, slander, defame

Antonyms: honor, exalt, glorify

Sentence: He is willing to smear his opponent if doing so would win the election.

  1. Mendacity (noun)

Meaning: a statement known by its maker to be untrue and made in order to deceive (असत्य)

Synonyms: lie, untruth, falsity

Antonyms: truth, veracity, honesty

Sentence: We demand legal warfare on deliberate political mendacity and its dissemination in the press.

  1. Swarming (adj.)

Meaning: moving in or forming a large or dense group. (झुंड)

Synonyms: abounding, abundant, crowd

Antonyms: devoid, empty

Sentence: The place was swarming with police and displaced residents.

  1. Scuffling (verb)

Meaning: engage in a short, confused fight or struggle at close quarters. (हाथापाई करना)

Synonyms: fight, struggle, tussle

Sentence: The teacher noticed two students scuffling in the corridor.

  1. Salutary (adj.)

Meaning: (especially with reference to something unwelcome or unpleasant) producing good effects; beneficial. (लाभदायक)

Synonyms: beneficial, advantageous, profitable

Antonyms: unfavourable, disadvantageous, unprofitable

Sentence: The team’s defeat is a salutary warning before the World Cup.

  1. Shirk (verb)

Meaning: avoid or neglect (a duty or responsibility) (भागना)

Synonyms: evade, dodge, avoid

Antonyms: accept, embrace, pursue

Sentence: He never shirked from doing his duty.

  1. Distraught (adj.)

Meaning: deeply upset and agitated. (व्याकुल)

Synonyms: worried, upset, distressed

Antonyms: calm, peaceful, placid

Sentence: Her distraught mother had spent all night waiting by the phone.
