‘Vocabulary’
- Ilk (noun)
Meaning: a number of persons or things that are grouped together because they have something in common (श्रेणी)
Synonyms: class, category, group
Sentence: I can’t tolerate people of his ilk.
- Obscenity (noun)
Meaning: the state or quality of being obscene; obscene behavior, language, or images. (अभद्रता)
Synonyms: indecency, immorality, impropriety
Antonyms: priggery, prudery, decency
Sentence: Existing laws on obscenity are to be tightened.
- Rechristened (verb)
Meaning: give a new name to. (नामकरण)
Synonyms: renamed, relabelled, called
Sentence: He rechristened Zaire the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Adjunct (noun)
Meaning: a person who helps a more skilled person (सहायक)
Synonyms: adjutant, apprentice, assistant
Sentence: He serves as an adjunct to the congressional delegation on its fact-finding mission.
- Howbeit (adv.)
Meaning: nevertheless; however. (परन्तु)
Synonyms: even so, however, nevertheless
Antonyms: all the same
Sentence: I’ve never written a poem before; howbeit, I feel my first attempt is quite good
- Sycophancy (noun)
Meaning: obsequious behavior toward someone important in order to gain advantage. (हाँ में हाँ मिलाना)
Synonyms: fawning, flattery, obsequiousness
Antonyms: bad-mouthing, belittlement
Sentence: Sycophancy was the device of the least trustworthy.
- Caliginous (adj.)
Meaning: being without light or without much light (अंधेरा)
Synonyms: black, dark, darkened
Antonyms: bright, brightened, illuminated
Sentence: Without a flashlight, there was no way to tell what kind of creatures lurked in the caliginous cave.
- Mettlesome (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person or animal) full of spirit and courage. (साहसी)
Synonyms: active, energetic, frisky
Antonyms: inactive, inanimate, lackadaisical
Sentence: The actor was considered a mettlesome dramatic performer.
- Subjugated (verb)
Meaning: bring under domination or control, especially by conquest. (अधीन करना)
Synonyms: conquer, vanquish, overpower
Antonyms: discharged, emancipated, enfranchised
Sentence: The invaders soon subjugated most of the native population.
- Disposition (noun)
Meaning: a person’s inherent qualities of mind and character. (स्वभाव)
Synonyms: nature, character, mentality
Sentence: Your sunny disposition has a way of rubbing off on those around you.
