 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Natty (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or an article of clothing) smart and fashionable. (स्वच्छ)

Synonyms: smart, stylish, fashionable

Antonyms: dishevelled, slovenly, unkempt

Sentence: Cliff was a natty dresser.

  1. Sinewy (adj.)

Meaning: having muscles capable of exerting great physical force (बलवान)

Synonyms: muscular, brawny, strong

Antonyms: delicate, feeble, frail

Sentence: I admire her sinewy prose style.

  1. Etiquette (noun)

Meaning: the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group. (शिष्टाचार)

Synonyms: polite behaviour, good manners, manners

Sentence: The couple exhibited poor etiquette when they left the party without saying good-bye to the host and hostess.

  1. Sterling (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or their work, efforts, or qualities) excellent or valuable. (अति उत्कृष्ट)

Synonyms: excellent, outstanding, splendid

Antonyms: atrocious, awful, execrable

Sentence: This organization does sterling work for youngsters.

  1. Consonance (noun)

Meaning: agreement or compatibility between opinions or actions. (समझौता)

Synonyms: agreement, concord, accord

Antonyms: discordance, conflict, disagreement

Sentence: This type of democracy is in consonance with our African heritage.

  1. Ebb (verb)

Meaning: (of an emotion or quality) gradually lessen or reduce. (अवनति)

Synonyms: diminish, dwindle, wane

Antonyms: ascent, rise, upswing

Sentence: Every tide has its ebb.

  1. Jurisprudence (noun)

Meaning: the theory or philosophy of law. (विधिशास्त्र)

Synonyms: judiciary, justice, law

Sentence: Codification is the highest contribution of jurisprudence.

  1. Decimation (noun)

Meaning: the state or fact of being rendered non-existent (बरबादी)

Synonyms: annihilation, demolishment, demolition

Antonyms: building, construction, protection

Sentence: The virtual decimation of the coastal town was caused by the hurricane.

  1. Roistering (verb)

Meaning: enjoy oneself or celebrate in a noisy or boisterous way. (समारोह मनाना)

Synonyms: enjoy oneself, celebrate, revel

Antonyms: hushed, noiseless, quiet

Sentence: The Earl’s wastrel son had spent the best part of his youth roistering and gambling.

  1. Extirpated (verb)

Meaning: root out and destroy completely. (समाप्त करना)

Synonyms: destroy, eradicate, root out

Antonyms: conserved, preserved, protected

Sentence: The triumph of modern medicine in extirpating certain diseases.
