 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Obstreperous (adj.)

Meaning: given to resisting authority or another’s control (अड़ियल)

Synonyms: rebellious, rebel, stubborn

Antonyms: obedient, docile, amiable

Sentence: Giles Gosling himself was somewhat scandalized at the obstreperous nature of their mirth.

  1. Penultimate (adj.)

Meaning: formal occurring immediately before the last one (अंतिम)

Synonyms: final, latest, concluding

Antonyms: first, eminent, premier

Sentence: The penultimate chapter of the book

  1. Pulchritude (noun)

Meaning: as in Beauty (ख़ूबसूरती)

Synonyms: glamor, beauty, prettiness

Antonyms: Ugliness, unattractiveness, imperfection

Sentence: The irresistible pulchritude of her friend

  1. Altruistic (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a concern for the welfare of others (परोपकारी)

Synonyms: selfless, generous, humanitarian

Antonyms: selfish, self-centered, cheap

Sentence: I’m not being altruistic in giving you these books, since I was going to have to lug them with me if you hadn’t come along

  1. Tenacious (adj.)

Meaning: continuing despite difficulties, opposition, or discouragement (दृढ़)

Synonyms: stubborn, resolute, insistent

Antonyms: yielding, surrendering, hesitant

Sentence: A tenacious trainer, she adheres to her grueling swimming schedule no matter what

  1. Reticent (adj.)

Meaning: given to keeping one’s activities hidden from public observation or knowledge (मितभाषी)

Synonyms: silent, secretive, quiet

Antonyms: open, communicative, frank

Sentence: She was morose, pale, and reticent.

  1. Disquietude (noun)

Meaning: an uneasy state of mind usually over the possibility of an anticipated misfortune or trouble (बेचैनी)

Synonyms: anxiety, concern, worry

Antonyms: contentment, ease, peace

Sentence: All hearts beat with disquietude, save only the heart of Michel Arden.

  1. Capitulate (verb)

Meaning: to yield to the control or power of enemy forces (आत्मसमर्पण)

Synonyms: succumb, surrender, submit

Antonyms: stand, endure, resist

Sentence: One side finally capitulated when it became clear that they couldn’t win the argument

  1. Tumultuous (adj.)

Meaning: marked by turmoil or disturbance especially of natural elements (उथल-पुथल)

Synonyms: turbulent, rough, wild

Antonyms: peaceful, quiet, calm

Sentence: One of the most tumultuous periods in the history of the region

  1. Erstwhile (adj.)

Meaning: having been such at some previous time (पूर्व)

Synonyms: past, bygone, former

Antonyms: current, present, ongoing

Sentence: His erstwhile friend turned against him.
