‘Vocabulary’
- Trammel (noun)
Meaning: a restriction or impediment to someone’s freedom of action. (प्रतिबंध)
Synonyms: restraint, obstacle, barrier
Antonyms: freedom, latitude
Sentence: We will forge our own future, free from the trammels of materialism.
- Severance (noun)
Meaning: the action of ending a connection or relationship. (पृथक्करण)
Synonyms: sundering, split, separation
Antonyms: union, reconciliation
Sentence: The hardest thing to cope with was the severance from his family.
- Putative (adj.)
Meaning: generally considered or reputed to be. (ख्यात)
Synonyms: supposed, assumed, presumed
Antonyms: real, unlikely
Sentence: The putative reason for her dismissal was poor job performance.
- Iffy (adj.)
Meaning: full of uncertainty; doubtful. (अनिश्चितता)
Synonyms: doubtful, undecided, questionable
Antonyms: sure, convinced, certain
Sentence: Simon’s still kind of iffy about going to Columbia.
- Ostracize (verb)
Meaning: exclude (someone) from a society or group. (निष्कासित करना)
Synonyms: exclude, shun, spurn
Antonyms: include, admit, accept
Sentence: He was ostracized by his colleagues for refusing to support the strike.
- Bourgeois (adj.)
Meaning: belonging to the class of people of middle social or economic rank (आर्थिक वर्ग)
Synonyms: working-class, middle-class, ordinary
Antonyms: aristocratic, noble, upper-class
Sentence: She came from a respectable bourgeois family.
- Multihued (adj.)
Meaning: marked by a variety of usually vivid colors (बहुरंगी)
Synonyms: chromatic, colored, colorful
Antonyms: colorless, monochromatic, monochromic
Sentence: This magnificent view shows the multihued beauty of the Adirondacks, a mountain range located in the northeastern part of New York.
- Discrepancy (noun)
Meaning: a lack of compatibility or similarity between two or more facts. (विसंगति)
Synonyms: difference, disparity, variance
Antonyms: similarity, resemblance, analogy
Sentence: The discrepancy of the calculations of my bill by the hotel and myself was a matter of concern.
- Reclusive (adj.)
Meaning: avoiding the company of other people; solitary. (एकांतप्रिय)
Synonyms: solitary, secluded, isolated
Antonyms: gregarious, extroverted, talkative
Sentence: The reclusive woman was more than happy to spend her day off reading and writing at home.
- Reprehensible (adj.)
Meaning: deserving censure or condemnation. (निन्दा)
Synonyms: deplorable, disgraceful, discreditable
Antonyms: inoffensive, unobjectionable, faultless
Sentence: I find their behaviour morally reprehensible.
