In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.
‘Vocabulary’
- Dastardly (adj.)
Meaning: wicked and cruel. (नीचतापूर्ण)
Synonyms: wicked, evil, iniquitous
Antonyms: noble, praiseworthy
Sentence: He described the killing as a dastardly act.
- Respite (noun)
Meaning: a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant. (मोहलत)
Synonyms: rest, break, interval
Sentence: The tablets brought temporary respite from the excruciating pain.
- Intransigent (adj.)
Meaning: unwilling or refusing to change one’s views or to agree about something. (सैद्धांतिक)
Synonyms: uncompromising, inflexible, unbending
Antonyms: acquiescent, agreeable, amenable
Sentence: He has remained intransigent, refusing all suggestions for improvement of the process.
- Stealthily (adv.)
Meaning: in a cautious and surreptitious manner, so as not to be seen or heard. (छिपकर)
Synonyms: furtively, secretively, sneakily
Antonyms: openly, publicly
Sentence: The thief stealthily stole into the house.
- Phlegmatic (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) having an unemotional and stolidly calm disposition. (आवेगहीन)
Synonyms: affectless, apathetic, emotionless
Antonyms: demonstrative, emotional, fervent
Sentence: The British character is often said to be phlegmatic.
- Aver (verb)
Meaning: state or assert to be the case. (दृढ़ता से कहना)
Synonyms: declare, assert, state
Antonyms: deny, gainsay
Sentence: I aver that I have spoken the truth.
- Contemn (verb)
Meaning: treat or regard with contempt. (नफ़रत करना)
Synonyms: despise, disdain, treat with contempt
Antonyms: honor, respect
Sentence: Arrogant critics who contemn the general public’s taste in art.
- Withal (adv.)
Meaning: in addition; as a further factor or consideration. (साथ ही साथ)
Synonyms: additionally, furthermore, as well
Sentence: She is fair and a wise lady withal.
- Edacious (adj.)
Meaning: having a huge appetite (लोभी)
Synonyms: esurient, gluttonous, greedy
Antonyms: content, glutted, sated
Sentence: Thinking of nothing special, why not have meals to satisfy the edacious stomach?
- Browbeat (verb)
Meaning: intimidate (someone), typically into doing something, with stern or abusive words. (धमकाना)
Synonyms: bully, hector, intimidate
Antonyms: cheer, comfort, console
Sentence: They browbeat him into signing the document.
