 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Sever (verb)

Meaning: divide by cutting or slicing, especially suddenly and forcibly. (अलग करना)

Synonyms: cut off, chop off, lop off

Antonyms: join, link, unite

Sentence: She wanted to sever all her connections with the firm.

  1. Nauseate (verb)

Meaning: to cause to feel disgust (घृणा करना)

Synonyms: disgust, gross out, put off

Antonyms: allure, attract, beguile

Sentence: The idea of eating raw shellfish nauseates me.

  1. Destitution (noun)

Meaning: poverty so extreme that one lacks the means to provide for oneself. (अभाव)

Synonyms: dire poverty, penury, impoverishment

Antonyms: affluence, opulence, wealth

Sentence: The family faced eviction and destitution.

  1. Expulsion (noun)

Meaning: the action of depriving someone of membership in an organization. (निष्कासन)

Synonyms: debarment, dismissal, exile

Antonyms: repatriation, return, immigration

Sentence: Expulsion from school is a harsh form of punishment.

  1. Commiserated (verb)

Meaning: express or feel sympathy or pity; sympathize. (हमदर्दी रखना)

Synonyms: offer sympathy to, feel pity for, condole with

Antonyms: distressed, tormented, irritated

Sentence: They commiserated the misfortune of their teacher.

  1. Unkempt (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of a person) having an untidy or disheveled appearance. (मैला)

Synonyms: untidy, shabby, scruffy

Antonyms: kempt, neat, tidy

Sentence: The old beggar was dirty and unkempt.

  1. Tardy (adj.)

Meaning: delaying or delayed beyond the right or expected time; late. (विलम्बी)

Synonyms: late, unpunctual, behind time

Antonyms: punctual, timely

Sentence: The boss is unsatisfied with the tardy tempo.

  1. Supple (adj.)

Meaning: bending and moving easily and gracefully; flexible. (लचीला)

Synonyms: lithe, limber, nimble

Antonyms: inflexible, rigid, stiff

Sentence: The gloves were made of very supple leather.

  1. Subterfuge (noun)

Meaning: deceit used in order to achieve one’s goal. (छल)

Synonyms: trickery, intrigue, deviousness

Antonyms: candor, directness

Sentence: Journalists often use subterfuge to obtain material for stories

  1. Goad (verb)

Meaning: provoke or annoy (someone) so as to stimulate some action or reaction. (अंकुश करना)

Synonyms: provoke, spur, prick

Antonyms: constrain, curb, hold back

Sentence: He goaded her on to more daring revelations.
