 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Felicity (noun)

Meaning: intense happiness. (परम सुख)

Synonyms: joy, happiness, bliss

Antonyms: misery, calamity, unhappiness

Sentence: Told his friends that marriage had brought him a felicity that he had never known before.

  1. Recant (verb)

Meaning: to solemnly or formally reject or go back on (as something formerly adhered to) (वापस लेना)

Synonyms: retract, withdraw, renounce

Antonyms: admit, acknowledge, claim

Sentence: He did not recant at the meeting, nor did he apologize.

  1. Bonhomie (noun)

Meaning: cheerful friendliness; geniality. (खुशमिज़ाजी)

Synonyms: geniality, congeniality, conviviality

Antonyms: hostility, intolerance, hatred

Sentence: He exuded good humor and bonhomie.

  1. Penitence (noun)

Meaning: the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance. (पछतावा)

Synonyms: remorse, guilt, regret

Antonyms: impenitence, remorselessness

Sentence: He expressed suitable penitence for what he had done.

  1. Cadge (verb)

Meaning: to persuade someone to give you (something) for free (भीख मांगना)

Synonyms: beg, coerce, request

Sentence: He spent his time trying to cadge drinks from the customers.

  1. Heed (noun)

Meaning: pay attention to; take notice of. (सावधानी)

Synonyms: attention, awareness, notice

Antonyms: disregard, neglect

Sentence: He didn’t heed my advice.

  1. Antsy (adj.)

Meaning: feeling or showing uncomfortable feelings of uncertainty (चिंतित)

Synonyms: worried, anxious, nervous

Antonyms: easy, calm, relaxed

Sentence: He was feeling understandably antsy about the tax audit.

  1. Medley (noun)

Meaning: an unorganized collection or mixture of various things (मिश्रण)

Synonyms: variety, assortment, jumble

Sentence: He played a medley of Beatles songs.

  1. Miserliness (noun)

Meaning: excessive desire to save money; extreme meanness. (कंजूसी)

Synonyms: avarice, acquisitiveness, parsimony

Antonyms: bounty, generosity, largesse

Sentence: The party earned a damaging reputation for miserliness by cutting pensions.

  1. Revile (verb)

Meaning: criticize in an abusive or angrily insulting manner. (बुरा-भला कहना)

Synonyms: criticize, censure, condemn

Antonyms: acclaim, applaud, commend

Sentence: They feared that he would revile them if they displeased him.
