 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Deter (verb)

Meaning: discourage (someone) from doing something by instilling doubt or fear of the consequences. (रोकना)

Synonyms: put off, discourage, dissuade

Antonyms: encourage, persuade

Sentence: Failure did not deter him.

  1. Feckless (adj.)

Meaning: lacking initiative or strength of character; irresponsible. (अबल)

Synonyms: worthless, incompetent, inefficient

Antonyms: effective, efficient, expedient

Sentence: He was portrayed as a feckless drunk.

  1. Retinue (noun)

Meaning: a group of advisers, assistants, or others accompanying an important person. (परिचारक वर्ग)

Synonyms: entourage, escort, staff

Sentence: He travelled with a huge retinue of servants.

  1. Tribulation (noun)

Meaning: a state of great suffering of body or mind (तनाव)

Synonyms: distress, agony, misery

Antonyms: comfort, relief, consolation

Sentence: Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation.

  1. Bailiwick (noun)

Meaning: a region of activity, knowledge, or influence (क्षेत्र)

Synonyms: area, domain, department

Sentence: You never give the presentations—that’s my bailiwick.

  1. Fret (verb)

Meaning: be constantly or visibly worried or anxious. (चिंतित)

Synonyms: worry, fear, stress

Antonyms: calm, soothe, comfort

Sentence: Don’t fret, everything will be all right.

  1. Docile (adj.)

Meaning: ready to accept control or instruction. (विनम्र)

Synonyms: compliant, obedient, submissive

Antonyms: defiant, unruly, rebellious

Sentence: Labradors are gentle, docile dogs.

  1. Vivacious (adj.)

Meaning: having much high-spirited energy and movement (प्रफुल्लित)

Synonyms: energetic, cheerful, active

Antonyms: languid, listless, indolent

Sentence: He had three pretty, vivacious daughters.

  1. Capitulate (verb)

Meaning: cease to resist an opponent or an unwelcome demand; surrender. (समर्पण)

Synonyms: succumb, submit, surrender

Antonyms: resist, fight, contend

Sentence: The enemy was warned to capitulate or face annihilation.

  1. Humdinger (noun)

Meaning: a remarkable or outstanding person or thing of its kind. (उत्कृष्ट)

Synonyms: marvellous, excellent, good

Antonyms: unremarkable, unimpressive

Sentence: I can say, his latest film is a humdinger.
