‘Vocabulary’

  1. Sortie (noun)

Meaning: an attack made by troops coming out from a position of defense. (धावा)

Synonyms: foray, sally, rush

Antonyms: retreat

Sentence: While leading a sortie Cleland was shot dead and was buried in the churchyard.

  1. Sizzle (verb)

Meaning: burn (something) superficially or lightly. (छनछनाना)

Synonyms: crackle, frizzle, sputter

Antonyms: freeze

Sentence: The sun was beginning to sizzle the land.

  1. Limber (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or body part) lithe or supple. (लचीला)

Synonyms: lithe, supple, nimble

Antonyms: hard, rigid, stiff

Sentence: I have to practice to keep myself limber.

  1. Mulling (verb)

Meaning: think about (a fact, proposal, or request) deeply and at length. (विचार करना)

Synonyms: ponder, consider, think over

Antonyms: forget, ignore, neglect

Sentence: she began to mull over the various possibilities.

  1. Tyranny (noun)

Meaning: cruel and oppressive government or rule. (उत्पीड़न)

Synonyms: despotism, absolutism, absolute power

Antonyms: democracy

Sentence: They came to America to escape political tyranny.

  1. Usher (noun)

Meaning: a person who shows people to their seats, especially in a theatre or at a wedding. (उपशिक्षक)

Synonyms: attendant, escort, guide

Sentence: The usher seated them in the front row.

  1. Hegemony (noun)

Meaning: leadership or dominance, especially by one country or social group over others. (नायकत्व)

Synonyms: leadership, dominance, supremacy

Antonyms: impotence, self-government

Sentence: The principal enjoyed his hegemony over the staff of the school.

  1. Exodus (noun)

Meaning: a mass departure of people, especially emigrants. (एक्सोदेस)

Synonyms: withdrawal, evacuation, leaving

Antonyms: arrival, coming, entry

Sentence: I joined the mass exodus for drinks during the interval.

  1. Dearth (noun)

Meaning: a scarcity or lack of something. (अकाल)

Synonyms: lack, scarcity, shortage

Antonyms: abundance, excess, surplus

Sentence: There is a dearth of evidence.

  1. Pelt (verb)

Meaning: attack (someone) by repeatedly hurling things at them. (मारना)

Synonyms: bombard, shower, attack

Antonyms: defend, uncover

Sentence: Two little boys pelted him with rotten apples.
