‘Vocabulary’
- Chide (verb)
Meaning: to criticize (someone) usually gently so as to correct a fault (डांटना)
Synonyms: scold, reprimand, berate
Antonyms: applaud, extol, praise
Sentence: The manager chided him for his delay.
- Straddle (verb)
Meaning: to be on both sides of (something) (विस्तार)
Synonyms: span, intersect, include
Antonyms: reduce, compact, close
Sentence: The movie straddles the line between comedy and drama.
- Crabby (adj.)
Meaning: easily irritated or annoyed (चिड़चिड़ा)
Synonyms: irritable, fractious, fretful
Antonyms: friendly, gregarious, cordial
Sentence: You’re a bit crabby this morning.
- Kowtow (verb)
Meaning: act in an excessively subservient manner. (अधीन होना)
Synonyms: grovel, be obsequious, be servile
Antonyms: rebellious, defiant
Sentence: Be polite, but don’t kowtow to him.
- Prostrated (verb)
Meaning: lay oneself flat on the ground face downward, especially in reverence or submission. (नमस्कार किया)
Synonyms: lie down, bow low
Sentence: They prostrated themselves before their king.
- Smorgasbord (noun)
Meaning: an unorganized collection or mixture of various things (मिश्रण)
Synonyms: variety, assortment, medley
Sentence: Every day the director has to first deal with a smorgasbord of problems before he can begin filming.
- Consternation (noun)
Meaning: feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected. (बेचैनी)
Synonyms: dismay, tension, panic
Antonyms: ease, contentment, tranquillity
Sentence: The announcement created surprise and consternation.
- Reckon (verb)
Meaning: establish by counting or calculation; calculate. (अनुमान करना)
Synonyms: suppose, figure, calculate
Sentence: We didn’t reckon for having such bad weather.
- Tinker (verb)
Meaning: attempt to repair or improve something in a casual or desultory way, often to no useful effect. (सुधार करना)
Synonyms: improve, upgrade, enhance
Antonyms: worsen, impair, damage
Sentence: He spent hours tinkering with the car.
- Exegesis (noun)
Meaning: critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture. (व्याख्या)
Synonyms: interpretation, explanation, exposition
Sentence: This psychobiography that purports to be the definitive exegesis of the late president’s character
