 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Denizen (noun)

Meaning: one who lives permanently in a place (निवासी)

Synonyms: resident, inhabitant, occupant

Antonyms: visitor, foreigner, tourist

Sentence: The polar bear is an iconic denizen of the snowy Arctic.

  1. Hedonism (noun)

Meaning: excessive pursuit of fleshly pleasures (सुखवाद)

Synonyms: sensuality, greed, carnality

Antonyms: abstinence, temperance, sobriety

Sentence: The hedonism of an island vacation.

  1. Shibboleth (noun)

Meaning: an idea or expression that has been used by many people (सिद्धांत)

Synonyms: truism, proverb, adage

Sentence: They still cling to many of the old shibboleths of education.

  1. Onerous (adj.)

Meaning: difficult to endure (कठिन)

Synonyms: tough, harsh, oppressive

Antonyms: easy, light, soft

Sentence: Their onerous errand completed; the men resumed their jobs.

  1. Subliminal (adj.)

Meaning: functioning outside the area of conscious awareness but acting to influence one’s thoughts or feelings (अचेतन)

Synonyms: simple, unconscious, hidden

Antonyms: conscious, aware, explicit

Sentence: Colour has a profound, though often subliminal influence on our senses and moods.

  1. Quibble (verb)

Meaning: to make often peevish criticisms or objections about matters that are minor, unimportant, or irrelevant (विवाद करना)

Synonyms: complain, nitpick, fuss

Antonyms: recommend, applaud, commend

Sentence: His main weakness is to quibble over unimportant things.

  1. Candor (noun)

Meaning: the free expression of one’s true feelings and opinions (स्पष्टवादिता)

Synonyms: directness, honesty, sincerity

Antonyms: indirection, dissimulation, dissembling

Sentence: An interview in which the members of the rock band speak with candor about their recent squabbling.

  1. Benignity (noun)

Meaning: sympathetic concern for the well-being of others (सौम्यता)

Synonyms: kindness, tenderness, beneficence

Antonyms: cruelty, savagery, inhumanity

Sentence: The benignity and protectiveness of or befitting a father.

  1. Buoyant (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a good mood or disposition (उत्साहित)

Synonyms: cheerful, optimistic, bright

Antonyms: gloomy, sullen, morose

Sentence: Phil was in a buoyant mood.

  1. Burble (noun)

Meaning: continuous murmuring noise. (बड़बड़ाता)

Synonyms: babble, prattle, chatter

Sentence: He burbles on about freedom.
