 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Labile (adj.)

Meaning: liable to change; easily altered. (अस्थिर)

Synonyms: unstable, Changing, varying

Antonyms: fixed, unalterable, inflexible

Sentence: Persons whose blood pressure is more labile will carry an enhanced risk of heart attack.

  1. Raddled (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or their face) showing signs of age or fatigue. (उलझा हुआ)

Synonyms: bewildered, dazed, confused

Antonyms: conscious, clearheaded

Sentence: He’s beginning to look quite raddled.

  1. Cachet (noun)

Meaning: the state of being respected or admired; prestige. (प्रतिष्ठा)

Synonyms: prestige, stature, status

Antonyms: shame, odium, pettiness

Sentence: No other brand name has quite the same cachet.

  1. Steadfast (adj.)

Meaning: firm in one’s allegiance to someone or something (दृढ़)

Synonyms: loyal, faithful, devout

Antonyms: faithless, treacherous, false

Sentence: Her steadfast belief never left her for one moment.

  1. Denigrate (verb)

Meaning: to express scornfully one’s low opinion of (निंदा करना)

Synonyms: criticize, disparage, denounce

Antonyms: applaud, praise, glorify

Sentence: It was unkind to denigrate his achievement.

  1. Moot (adj.)

Meaning: subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty. (विवादास्पद)

Synonyms: questionable, debatable, disputable

Antonyms: sure, unanswerable, certain

Sentence: He argued that the issue had become moot since the board had changed its policy.

  1. Snivel (verb)

Meaning: to complain or cry in an annoying way (बच्चे की तरह रोना)

Synonyms: cry, weep, groan

Antonyms: laugh, giggle, chuckle

Sentence: I’ve warned you. If you fail, don’t come snivelling back to me.

  1. Paroxysm (noun)

Meaning: a sudden attack or violent expression of a particular emotion or activity. (आवेग)

Synonyms: outburst, agony, gust

Sentence: In a sudden paroxysm of jealousy, she threw her clothes out of the window.

  1. Transpired (verb)

Meaning: as in happened; to take place (घटित होना)

Synonyms: happen, occur, take place

Sentence: Exactly what transpired remains unknown.

  1. Arsenal (noun)

Meaning: a place where military arms are stored (शस्त्रागार)

Synonyms: armory, warehouse, depot

Sentence: They sent the ordnance officer to the arsenal for weapons.
