‘Vocabulary’

  1. Scruple (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of doubt or hesitation with regard to the morality or propriety of a course of action. (संदेह)

Synonyms: qualms, compunction, hesitation

Antonyms: assurance, certitude, confidence

Sentence: The villain made no scruple of committing murder.

  1. Mooted (verb)

Meaning: raise (a question or topic) for discussion; suggest (an idea or possibility). (बहस करना)

Synonyms: raise, bring up, broach

Antonyms: censored, hushed (up), quieted

Sentence: The idea was first mooted as long ago as the 1840s.

  1. Serenity (noun)

Meaning: the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled. (शांति)

Synonyms: calmness, tranquillity, peacefulness

Antonyms: bustle, tumult, turmoil

Sentence: Her face had an expression of absolute serenity.

  1. Hectored (verb)

Meaning: talk to (someone) in a bullying way. (बदमाशी से बात करना)

Synonyms: bully, intimidate, browbeat

Antonyms: comforted, consoled, soothed

Sentence: Brooks had hectored employees who refused to work overtime.

  1. Ruminate (verb)

Meaning: think deeply about something. (विचार करना)

Synonyms: think about, contemplate, consider

Antonyms: disregard, ignore, overlook

Sentence: She ruminated for weeks about whether to tell him or not.

  1. Tidings (noun)

Meaning: news; information. (ख़बर)

Synonyms: news, information, reports

Sentence: Have you heard the glad tidings?

  1. Remit (verb)

Meaning: cancel or refrain from exacting or inflicting (a debt or punishment). (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: cancel, revoke, abrogate

Sentence: The legislature has remitted the matter to the next session,

  1. Sanguine (adj.)

Meaning: optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation. (आशावादी)

Synonyms: optimistic, hopeful, positive

Antonyms: doubtful, dubious, uncertain

Sentence: He is sanguine about prospects for the global economy.

  1. Palliate (verb)

Meaning: to make more bearable or less severe (कम करना)

Synonyms: allay, alleviate, assuage

Antonyms: aggravate, exacerbate

Sentence: This medicine should palliate your cough at least a little.

  1. Ennoble (verb)

Meaning: give (someone) a noble rank or title. (उदात्त बनाना)

Synonyms: aggrandize, canonize, elevate

Antonyms: abase, degrade, demean

Sentence: The heroic actions of firefighters during the terrorist attack did much to ennoble the profession of firefighting in the public mind.
