The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  29th May 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Modicum (noun)

Meaning: a small quantity of a particular thing, especially something considered desirable or valuable. (अल्पांश)

Synonyms: little bit, small amount, particle

Sentence: Only a modicum of skill is necessary to put the kit together.

  1. Scuttlebutt (noun)

Meaning: information or opinion that is widely disseminated without any authority or confirmation of accuracy (अफ़वाह)

Synonyms: rumor, gossip, hearsay

Sentence: According to scuttlebutt in the financial markets, the company will be downsizing soon.

  1. Impervious (adj.)

Meaning: impossible to get through or into (अप्रवेश्य)

Synonyms: dense, impermeable, close

Antonyms: permeable, soft, passable

Sentence: Rubber boots are impervious to water.

  1. Junket (noun)

Meaning: an extravagant trip or celebration, in particular one enjoyed by a government official at public expense. (भ्रमण)

Synonyms: tour, outing, jaunt

Sentence: On this particular junket he was shopping for real estate.

  1. Antithetical (adj.)

Meaning: directly opposed or contrasted; mutually incompatible. (विरोधात्मक)

Synonyms: contradictory, contrary, opposite

Antonyms: similar, analogous, like

Sentence: Their priorities are antithetical to those of environmentalists.

  1. Chagrin (noun)

Meaning: distress or embarrassment at having failed or been humiliated. (चिढ़)

Synonyms: disappointment, frustration, dissatisfaction

Antonyms: joy, fulfilment, happiness

Sentence: Much to his chagrin, he did not win the race.

  1. Limn (verb)

Meaning: to give a representation or account of in words (चित्रित)

Synonyms: describe, depict, portray

Antonyms: misrepresent, falsify

Sentence: He limned the scene in the courtroom so perfectly I could practically see it.

  1. Heeded (verb)

Meaning: pay attention to; take notice of. (मान ली)

Synonyms: followed, noted, obeyed

Antonyms: ignored, disregarded, dismissed

Sentence: If he had only heeded my warnings, none of this would have happened.

  1. Sedentary (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) tending to spend much time seated; somewhat inactive. (निष्क्रिय)

Synonyms: dormant, immobile, inanimate

Antonyms: active, mobile, busy

Sentence: They led a sedentary life after retirement, spending their days in front of the television.

  1. Yammer (noun)

Meaning: to express dissatisfaction, pain, or resentment usually tiresomely (परेशान)

Synonyms: complain, scream, whine

Antonyms: rejoice, delight, tolerate

Sentence: Customers yammered on for what seemed like days about the billing mistake.
